Domino Printing Sciences’ latest piezo inkjet (PIJ) printer specifically addresses the needs of the food and beverage packaging industry. It offers a reliable solution for printing durable, large-area, high-resolution codes onto non-porous surfaces, including shelf-ready and secondary packaging.

“In today’s fast-paced, consumer-driven world, brands are increasingly looking to stand out and enhance shelf appeal. This shift is driving a move from plain, brown cardboard to branded non-porous substrates for shelf-ready and display packaging,” explains David Edwards, product manager – PIJ, Domino.

“With non-porous packaging, code durability can be a significant concern, particularly for food-contact materials. Compliant solutions often fall short in legibility and durability, leading to waste in terms of ink and energy consumption. We have developed the Cx150i with these critical considerations in mind.”

The Cx150i, part of Domino’s proven Cx-Series range of PIJ printers, is designed for large-area printing using durable, UV-curable inks that ensure excellent scratch and rub resistance. This high-resolution system, capable of up to 600 dpi, can print exceptionally small characters of just 1 mm, making it ideal for small Asian character sets and dense 2D codes—including QR codes powered by GS1. A variety of inks are also available, including options compliant with international GMP standards and EuPIA for safe use on secondary food packaging.

When compared to alternative printing methods, the Cx150i’s UV-curable ink set provides exceptional quality, density, and durability with minimal volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. The printer itself is engineered to be environmentally responsible, utilizing low-energy, LED curing lamps and an innovative ink pouch system to reduce waste. Notably, it eliminates the need for regular cleaning or ink purging, along with requiring no factory air, thereby further minimizing waste and overall energy consumption.

The Cx150i can function as a standalone unit or be integrated alongside Domino’s automated coding and vision systems, creating a closed-loop solution for printing and verification. It is Industry 4.0-ready and offers a wide range of connectivity options, including integration with third-party label creation packages, factory ERP systems, and various packaging and processing equipment. Additionally, optional connectivity to Domino’s cloud-based services ensures 24/7 visibility into printer performance and utilization.

“We are thrilled to present the Cx150i to the market,” states Paul Clarke, director – printers & consumables, Domino. “We recognize the challenges manufacturers face with printing on coated and non-porous shelf-ready food packaging and are proud to offer a low-impact, compliant solution that delivers both outstanding print quality and durability.”
