Siegwerk, a leading global provider of printing inks and coatings for packaging applications and labels, has partnered with DG press, a specialist in manufacturing hybrid web offset sleeve machines for flexible packaging and label printing. With over 100 sleeve offset machines installed worldwide, the collaboration aims to produce functional mono-material packaging structures for food applications efficiently.
Together, the two partners are focused on demonstrating the efficient production of mono-material food packaging with an oxygen barrier. Siegwerk’s coating innovations Cirkit® OxyBar BC 1582 and Cirkit® Heatguard 2K Overprint Varnish are key components in achieving the necessary barrier properties. These coatings are applied in one pass, inline with printing and varnishing, using DG press’s hybrid web offset printing press.
Siegwerk’s Cirkit® OxyBar is an innovative oxygen barrier coating that ensures a prolonged shelf-life, particularly for dry food packaging applications. The coating can be applied on flexo and gravure presses at industrial machine speeds on various substrates, providing excellent transparency. Cirkit® Heatguard, on the other hand, offers a range of heat-resistant lacquers that perform well on high-speed FFS (Form, Fill and Seal) lines with mono-PE structures. These lacquers have excellent rub and scratch resistance, enabling the transition to surface-print structures.
With this collaboration project, the partners aim to showcase Siegwerk’s printable coatings’ ability to create the necessary functional properties for mono-material food packaging. Additionally, the project demonstrates that DG press’s modularly designed hybrid web offset printing presses can produce such packaging structures in one pass with at least one functional barrier coating inline. “This project underscores the importance of collaboration throughout the packaging value chain to drive the development of new circular packaging solutions,” emphasizes Lothar Schaeffeler, Technology and Innovation Expert at Siegwerk. “Together with our partners, we can bring mono-material packaging to fruition and establish new standards for the future of packaging.”
