Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley, in collaboration with Valley partners Nestlé and Tetra Pak, convened 60+ Swiss and European partners at a nationwide event in Bern this week.

The purpose of the joint project is to showcase promising approaches in sustainable packaging materials and foster innovation through new collaborations.

CEO of Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley, Christina Senn-Jakobsen, emphasized the importance of collaborative innovation showcased at the event.

“The challenges surrounding sustainable packaging demand collective efforts. Collaboration between startups, established multinationals, research institutions, and governmental bodies is essential,” Senn-Jakobsen emphasized.

Nestlé’s R&D global packaging lead, Rob Hoitink, sees innovation as a key driver for achieving the goal of 100% recyclable or reusable packaging.

“Today’s event underscores the critical role of R&D collaboration across the ecosystem to hasten the development and implementation of new solutions,” Hoitink highlighted.

Director of R&D partnerships at Tetra Pak, Gustavo Barros, added, “Collaboration with our customers, suppliers, and industry stakeholders has been fundamental to our sustainability journey. Our unwavering commitment to sustainability propels us to explore innovative materials and technologies. Today, we have engaged with several innovators whose research can propel us forward. We anticipate ongoing discussions.”

The Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley team will release a report summarizing the key insights and takeaways from the event for public consumption.
