Cano Water, the world’s first canned water brand, has enhanced its foodservice offerings through a strategic partnership with Tortilla, Europe’s premier fast-casual Mexican restaurant chain. This collaboration is set to eliminate one tonne of plastic waste annually, providing a more sustainable hydration option for customers while underlining the importance of food and drink sustainable packaging.
Beginning 3rd December, Cano Water’s still and sparkling cans will serve as the exclusive water choice in company-owned Tortilla branches across England, Scotland, and Wales. This initiative completely removes plastic bottled water from these locations, further advancing their sustainability goals.
This significant rollout highlights Tortilla’s deep commitment to sustainability throughout its operations in Great Britain, thereby establishing a benchmark for the fast-casual dining sector. Sustainability is integral to Tortilla’s strategy, which already includes sending zero waste to landfill, sourcing 100% renewable electricity, and minimizing food waste through innovative partnerships. Notably, last year, Tortilla saved nearly 60,000 meals through its collaboration with Too Good To Go and donated 2,500 meals to those in need.
Founded in 2015, Cano Water aims to tackle plastic pollution by providing an accessible solution. With a goal of saving one billion plastic bottles from reaching landfills by 2030, Cano Water’s aluminum packaging ensures that each can is infinitely recyclable; in fact, the same aluminum could be back on store shelves within 60 days.
The brand has quickly gained traction in the beverage industry, evidenced by its high-profile celebrity investors, including Ricky Gervais and Jess Glynne. Cano Water is also popular among stars like Irina Shayk, Daniel Craig, Dua Lipa, and Ed Sheeran.
With availability across multiple distribution channels, including Selfridge’s, Ocado, Tesco, and Amazon, Cano Water has fostered a devoted following, boasting over 60 million cans sold throughout the UK.
Josh White, Co-Founder and CEO of Cano Water, said: “This partnership with Tortilla represents a pivotal moment in our journey to revolutionise the beverage industry. We’re not just replacing plastic bottles; we’re changing mindsets. The fast-casual dining sector has a unique opportunity to influence consumer behaviour daily. By making sustainable choices the norm rather than the exception, we’re setting a new standard that we hope will ripple across the entire food and beverage industry. This collaboration is a testament to the power of like-minded businesses coming together to drive meaningful change.”
Andy Naylor, Chief Executive Officer at Tortilla, stated: “This is a significant step in our ambition towards achieving net zero across our operations by 2025, building on the important progress we’ve already made. Cano Water has provided us with a brilliant product that will not only reduce plastic waste but hopefully encourage positive changes in customer behaviour, an important step in the fight against climate change. We’ve set ourselves ambitious sustainability targets, and this collaboration will complement our ongoing efforts, such as removing plastic cutlery and ensuring that 92% of our packaging is recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable, with many materials sourced from recycled content.”
