Asahi Group Japan has introduced LIKE MILK, the nation’s inaugural yeast-based beverage that mimics milk characteristics. This innovative product is housed in SIG SmallBloc aseptic cartons and filled with the advanced SIG Small 12 Aseptic filling machine, renowned for its high-output and flexibility. Currently, LIKE MILK is undergoing test sales at select Japanese supermarkets and e-commerce platforms, with plans to broaden distribution by 2026. This launch signifies the initial phase of collaboration between Asahi Group Japan and SIG.

Produced by co-packer Mori Milk, LIKE MILK marks Asahi’s first commercial venture in partnership with SIG. “Through LIKE MILK, we aim to foster a society that values food diversity, enabling everyone to enjoy culinary options regardless of physical conditions like allergies, ethical beliefs, or preferences for non-dairy and health-conscious alternatives. Unlike traditional dairy substitutes derived from soy, oats, or nuts, LIKE MILK is innovatively yeast-based, developed utilizing Asahi Group’s proprietary yeast technology. This results in a beverage offering protein and calcium levels akin to cow milk, while remaining free from milk components and the 28 designated allergenic ingredients. This makes it particularly suitable for health-conscious consumers and individuals with dietary restrictions,” stated Tomohiro Hata, Senior Manager, Future Creation Headquarters Department at Asahi Group Japan.

“Our LIKE MILK product reached the market swiftly and with exceptional quality, thanks to SIG’s adaptable filling technology and co-packing network. As consumer preferences continue to evolve—including an increasing focus on health and sustainability—agility in product development and packaging has become essential.”

At the heart of this launch is the SIG Small 12 Aseptic machine, a highly versatile filling solution that supports two distinct carton formats—SIG SmallBloc and SIG SmallFit—while managing up to 16 aseptic carton variants, encompassing various volumes in addition to closure and straw solutions, all on a single filling system. With a capability of producing 12,000 packs per hour, this filling line empowers beverage manufacturers to expedite product development, enhance time-to-market, and swiftly adapt to consumer trends. Its unique ability to transition between volumes and formats in minutes without sacrificing output allows brands to align with consumer preferences efficiently.

“LIKE MILK is an exemplary instance of harnessing the agility and speed provided by our filling technology,” remarked Angela Lu, President & General Manager, Asia Pacific at SIG. “The SIG Small 12 Aseptic equips brands like Asahi with the flexibility to prototype new concepts and scale them rapidly. This launch illustrates how SIG’s food and drink packaging solutions can enable new product categories in competitive markets.” As the demand among Japanese consumers continues to diversify, manufacturers are increasingly relying on partners like SIG to facilitate streamlined production and foster rapid innovation.

Through the introduction of LIKE MILK, Asahi Group Japan and SIG are exemplifying agility and purpose-driven beverage development within convenient and sustainable food and drink packaging solutions, addressing genuine market needs.
