Amcor (NYSE: AMCR, ASX: AMC), a leading global provider of food and drink packaging solutions, has introduced a lightweight and ergonomically designed closure for Wattwiller, a high-end water brand available in France. This innovative tethered cap is the result of a collaborative effort with Wattwiller’s parent company, Spadel.

Wattwiller offers natural mineral water characterized by zero nitrates and low sodium, resulting in a neutral and balanced flavor profile. The brand is dedicated to minimizing its environmental impact and, in 2020, became the first French SME in the water sector to achieve 100% carbon neutrality throughout its product lifecycle. From production and packaging to bottling and distribution, Wattwiller continually implements strategies to lessen its ecological footprint. The new cap further underscores Spadel’s commitment to advancing food and drink sustainable packaging solutions.

Over the course of a year, Amcor and Spadel developed this groundbreaking closure. Made from HDPE, it is recyclable with PET bottles and is noticeably lighter than its predecessor. Furthermore, Amcor transitioned to a smaller 26mm neck, which contributes to further weight reduction. This closure is produced at Amcor’s facility in Frankental, Germany.

“Compared with the previous solution, Amcor’s closure is lighter and better aligned with Spadel’s sustainability goals,” stated Amcor Product Line Director Sarah de la Mare. “The project leveraged our strengths in R&D, design, and lightweighting.”

In addition to its lightweight construction, the closure fosters inclusivity by aiding consumers with limited dexterity, such as the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Its flower-shaped design features both smooth and ribbed surfaces for enhanced grip, facilitating easier opening. This results in a premium closure that surpasses standard offerings in the still water segment, exemplifying Wattwiller’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and accessibility.

“Collaboration was central to this project,” added Sarah de la Mare. “Working closely with Spadel allowed us to identify challenges effectively and demonstrate that not all tethered caps are the same. Amcor’s solutions are innovative, forward-thinking, and practical.”

“This closure not only showcases Amcor’s proven ability to partner with clients but also illustrates how inclusive design can coexist with sustainability goals,” she continued.

“We’re proud of this collaboration with Amcor,” remarked Julian Schmitt, Marketing Manager at Spadel. “Their expertise has enabled us to create an innovative closure that reflects both our dedication to reducing environmental impact and our commitment to accessible design in our packaging.”
