Aldi UK is set to launch the Cambalala South African Shiraz and Cambalala South African Sauvignon Blanc in lightweight paper bottles on 18 March, just in time for Global Recycling Day. These innovative bottles, made from 94% recycled paperboard and lined with a food-grade pouch, are fully recyclable and five times lighter than traditional glass bottles.
By making the switch to paper packaging and distributing nationwide, Aldi has achieved a significant reduction in carbon footprint, equivalent to driving around the planet 5.8 times. This move aims to cater to eco-conscious wine enthusiasts and promote sustainability in the food and drink industry.
Julie Ashfield, Aldi UK’s managing director of buying, highlighted the supermarket’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Shoppers are striving to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, looking for small ways to make a big difference for our planet. We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle, helping to drive sustainable change.”
Malcolm Waugh, chief executive of Frugalpac, expressed excitement over partnering with Aldi on this groundbreaking initiative. The collaboration aims to provide consumers with greener choices and promote responsible and sustainable drinking habits. By offering these paper bottles in a major UK supermarket, more shoppers can now contribute to environmental conservation efforts and enjoy eco-friendly packaging options.
