Agromark, a Spanish export company that specializes in fruits and vegetables, has managed to enhance its return on investment (ROI) and reduce its carbon footprint by adopting Tosca’s foldable bins, a popular and eco-friendly food packaging solution.

Tosca, a world leader in reusable packaging and performance pooling solutions, has collaborated closely with Agromark to find the ideal transport and storage solution for the company’s broccoli exports from Spain to the UK. Broccoli, a delicate vegetable that is part of the cruciferous family, requires highly efficient packaging that preserves its freshness and quality throughout the supply chain.

Thanks to Tosca’s comprehensive consultancy process, the company identified the perfect solution for Agromark’s needs. By replacing the rigid plastic boxes previously adopted by the company, Tosca created a reusable and foldable plastic container that was tailored to the application.

The foldable bins that Tosca designed to protect the quality and freshness of the broccoli are 120x100x80cm in size and have a customised base. The top layers of broccoli remain undamaged even when the container is at maximum capacity. This solution extensively enhances ventilation and prolongs the shelf life of Agromark’s broccoli, ensuring that it arrives in excellent condition to British customers. Consequently, Agromark has witnessed a significant decrease in product waste and losses.

The foldable bin from Tosca also offers several benefits, including cost savings and sustainability. Importantly, the bin is highly efficient in terms of storage. Its height is just 36.5cm when empty, optimising storage efficiency during return trips. In effect, Agromark can now transport 104 more empty bins per truck, totalling 182 foldable bins, compared to their previous solution with rigid bins. This substantial increase in capacity results in a 75% reduction in return trips for Agromark, leading to substantial cost savings and a meaningful reduction in CO2 emissions.

Carlos Doménech, the operations manager of Agromark, expressed his satisfaction with Tosca’s partnership, saying that the company has been working with Tosca since 2015 because of its expertise in the fruit and vegetable supply chain. Carlos emphasised that whenever Agromark face any business challenges, they turn to Tosca to help find the right solutions that meet their requirements and enhance the efficiency and future-proofing of their supply chain.

Moreover, Tosca’s foldable bins also offer an added advantage of easy repair. In the event of damage, there is no need to discard and replace bins.
