The expansion of The Original Baker represents a major advancement within the food manufacturing sector. Following a significant investment from the Olidor Group, the company’s production capacity has doubled, facilitating the launch of new product lines while also creating valuable job opportunities.
Recently, the North Malton site has gained 22,000 additional square feet of production space thanks to the construction of a new facility. The investment has also been allocated for new equipment and improvements in logistics, enabling an expansion into e-commerce. This move aims to provide high-quality products to smaller independent cafes, retailers, and delis.
Over the next 12 months, the expansion is projected to generate 30 new jobs. Recruitment efforts are currently underway, with open positions including bakery operatives, quality controllers, supervisory roles, and specialist food technologists.
Mike Walker, managing director of the company, referred to this development as a “landmark moment for The Original Baker.”
He elaborated, “The investment from the Olidor Group has enabled us to grow sustainably while staying true to our artisan roots. This expansion has strengthened our position as the leading producer of artisan premium pastry and created rewarding careers for talented people in our community.”
Founded in 2018 by Gill Ridgard, The Original Baker is renowned for its handmade pies, pasties, and sausage rolls.
Ridgard began her first bakery venture, the Yorkshire Baker, in 2008. This venture garnered attention from Cranswick, leading to a joint partnership.
Subsequently, she opted to return to her original vision of supporting independent businesses, and, with Cheryl Barrett, established The Original Baker.
In 2023, the company became part of the Olidor Group, joining its impressive portfolio, which includes Brusco Food Group, Karimix, Four Anjels, The Artful Baker, and Porter Foods.
“We invest in businesses with strong values, exceptional products, and clear growth potential,” remarked Andrew Ashby, CEO at Olidor Group.
“The Original Baker ticks every box. Together, we’re building on their artisan heritage while creating a strong future for the brand and the people behind it. The support and backing of a larger group have enabled The Original Baker to make long-term investments that will cement their position as the UK’s leading producer of handcrafted sweet and savoury bakery products.”
Recent Companies House filings for the year ending 31 December 2023 indicate that the Olidor Group achieved a 20% year-on-year turnover growth. Although net profit slightly decreased, the company attributed this to ongoing investments in people and infrastructure.
