Plastipak has commissioned a €25 million PET Material Center in Verbania, Italy, dedicated to producing pakPET Single Pellet Solution, a resin containing 30% recycled material from the outset.

For brand owners, the solution offers a way to increase recycled content without overhauling established production procedures.

Plastipak Packaging, Inc. formally unveiled the facility on 14 October. Italian government representatives joined Plastipak CEO Ed Morgan at the opening ceremony.

The company has invested more than €25 million in the centre, which complements its global network of five recycling plants. The site draws on Plastipak’s capabilities in recycling, resin manufacture, preform production and rigid packaging.

Recycled content designed for existing lines

The centre produces pakPET Single Pellet Solution, which brings together the performance characteristics of virgin PET and recycled content in one ready-to-process resin.

Plastipak says the single-pellet format can streamline processing while maintaining dependable packaging performance. As a result, customers can introduce recycled content into existing PET manufacturing systems with fewer operational changes.

The solution provides 30% recycled content within a single pellet, works with established PET equipment, reduces processing and qualification complexity, has food-contact approval for relevant packaging uses, and offers certified traceability of post-consumer feedstock under EN15343.

“Customers need solutions that make recycled content easier to incorporate while delivering the quality and reliability their operations depend on,” said Pedro Martins, executive managing director, Europe, at Plastipak. “Our PET Material Center in Verbania brings together Plastipak’s materials expertise and manufacturing capabilities to help customers move their packaging goals forward.”

Practical value for packaging brands

The proposition focuses on making recycled PET easier to adopt. In many businesses, the challenge is not the commitment to recycled content but the potential effect on plant operations, product approval and production consistency. Plastipak addresses those concerns through compatibility with existing lines and a qualification process intended to require less time and effort.

Food-contact approval makes the material particularly relevant to companies responding to food and drink consumer trends, food and beverage industry trends and evolving food and drink regulations. Plastipak also identifies applications in food and beverage containers, household and personal care packaging, pharmaceutical packs and thermoformed products.

Supply-chain visibility is another important feature. EN15343-certified traceability provides documented support for the post-consumer recycled content used in the resin. That evidence can help companies substantiate packaging claims and meet expectations linked to food and drink sustainability.

An integrated supply proposition

Plastipak positions itself as a major recycler of rigid plastic packaging, producing food-grade post-consumer recycled resin while also designing and manufacturing rigid plastic containers.

The Verbania operation brings these capabilities together through ready-to-use material solutions. For customers, this could simplify sourcing by enabling one supplier to support resin, preform and packaging requirements instead of managing separate partners at each stage.

This integrated model reflects wider food manufacturing trends and developments in food processing technology, where manufacturers increasingly seek reliable materials and fewer handoffs across the supply chain. It may also support food distribution trends that place greater emphasis on packaging performance, traceability and resource efficiency.

A clear direction for recycled PET

Plastipak is targeting businesses that want to increase recycled content without compromising quality, production rates or approval timelines.

By supplying PET with recycled material already incorporated and supported by certified traceability, the company aims to make recycled PET a routine specification rather than a complex, one-off initiative. The approach aligns with broader food and drink industry innovation, including progress in food and drink packaging and food and drink marketing, as brands communicate measurable sustainability improvements to customers.
