Seafood Patent Activity Dominated by CJ and Nissui Food and Beverage Business

In the food and beverage industry, patent activity is a crucial indicator of innovation and development. In the year leading up to June, South Korea’s CJ Group and Japan’s Nissui Corp. emerged as the top fish and seafood companies in terms of patent applications.

CJ Group, a prominent food-to-media conglomerate, filed 12 patent applications during this period. Meanwhile, Tokyo-based Nissui Corp. secured nine applications, showcasing their commitment to technological advancements and intellectual property.

An interesting contender was Jiangnan University, a Chinese educational institution, which filed 11 patent applications related to fish and seafood. This highlights the growing capabilities of universities in driving innovation in the industry.

Examining the broader patent landscape, the report revealed revealed that health and wellness remained a major theme in the fish and seafood sector, with 355 patent applications filed during the analyzed 12 months. This emphasis on health aligns with evolving consumer trends and preferences for nutritious food options.

However, it is worth noting that the overall number of patent applications in the fish and seafood industry decreased compared to the previous year. Between July 2021 and June 2022, a total of 1,709 applications were lodged, but this figure dropped to 1,395 in the corresponding period a year later. This decline suggests a potential slowdown in innovation within the sector.

Geographically, China emerged as the frontrunner in terms of patent applications in both periods reviewed. This demonstrates China’s ambition to establish itself as a leader in fish and seafood-related technological advancements.
