Thai Union targets achieving net zero emissions by 2050

Thai Union, the global leader in seafood, has become the first seafood processor to establish science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in alignment with the Paris Agreement. The company aims to limit global warming to 1.5˚C, as per the 2015 agreement. Thai Union’s new SeaChange 2030 sustainability plan sets aggressive goals to reduce GHG emissions across its value chain, with a commitment to reduce scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 42% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Adam Brennan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Thai Union Group, stated, “We will drive the deployment of new environmental data collection tools and help deliver a net zero economy.” The company plans to implement initiatives such as reducing emissions from production processes, ensuring zero deforestation across its value chain, sourcing 100% certified sustainable soy and palm oil, and using recyclable packaging for 100% of its branded products by 2025 and 60% of its private label products by 2030.

The seafood industry is responsible for fewer GHG emissions compared to its land-based counterpart, accounting for just 4% of global food production emissions. As a leader in the industry, Thai Union aims to accelerate its path to a healthier and more sustainable world. By setting science-based targets verified by the Science Based Targets initiative, Thai Union is demonstrating its commitment to combatting climate change and advancing a more sustainable food and beverage industry.

Overall, Thai Union’s SeaChange 2030 sustainability plan reflects its dedication to reducing GHG emissions, minimizing waste, safeguarding ecosystems, promoting fair and equitable work conditions, and creating a healthier world. The company’s initiatives highlight the importance of sustainable sourcing, responsible practices, and innovative packaging solutions to achieve these goals.

Through its ambitious targets and holistic approach, Thai Union is setting a benchmark for other seafood processors and the wider food and drink industry. With the implementation of science-based targets and the adoption of sustainable practices, companies can contribute to limiting global warming and creating a more sustainable future.
