Scotland-based A.G. Barr has recently acquired the Rio brand from Hall and Woodhouse Limited for £12.3m ($15m). A.G. Barr has been exclusively marketing and distributing Rio through its Boost Drinks division since 2021, following the acquisition of Boost Drinks last year. Rio is a refreshing blend of real fruit and juice, including orange, guava, apricot, mango, and passionfruit, gently carbonated in sparkling water. This gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and vegan-friendly beverage has undergone a reformulation to reduce sugar content to under 4.5g per 100ml, ensuring compliance with the UK’s Sugar Drinks Industry Levy. Moreover, Rio offers a no added sugar option with only 17 calories per 330ml can.

By adding Rio to their portfolio, which already includes renowned UK brands such as IRN-BRU, Rubicon, FUNKIN, and Boost, A.G. Barr continues to strengthen its presence in the food and beverage industry. In December, the company obtained full ownership of MOMA Foods, a barista-focused oat drink brand, further expanding its diverse range of products.

With a focus on brand building, A.G. Barr swiftly secured the long-term position of Rio within its wider portfolio after the Boost acquisition. This strategic move aligns with the company’s ongoing margin rebuild program, although it is not anticipated to significantly impact profits for the current financial year ending on 28 January 2024.

As the food and beverage industry trends continue to evolve, A.G. Barr remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and meeting regulatory requirements. The company understands the importance of packaging, marketing, and staying in tune with consumer preferences within the ever-changing landscape of the food and drink industry. Transitioning towards active voice, the content elucidates A.G. Barr’s proactive approach to securing the Rio brand, its dedication to the industry’s trends, and its commitment to providing high-quality beverages to consumers.
