Andrew Connon has officially been elected as the new president of National Farmers’ Union (NFU) Scotland following a decisive vote during the Union’s recent council meeting.

Connon takes over the leadership mantle from Martin Kennedy, who previously held the position. In this election, Alasdair Macnab also competed for the presidential role but was unsuccessful.

Under the current NFU Scotland constitution, Connon will serve a term of two years. It is worth noting that presidents may serve a maximum of two consecutive two-year terms. This structured approach ensures continuity while allowing for fresh leadership over time.

In addition to Connon’s election, the council also elected Duncan Macalister and Robert Neill as the new vice presidents. They will initially serve for a two-year term, after which the position will transition back to an annual election cycle.

After the election result was announced, newly-appointed NFU Scotland president Andrew Connon expressed his gratitude and commitment: “It is an incredible honour to have been elected and I promise that I will do my utmost to serve Scotland’s farmers and crofters to the best of my ability, striving to meet the incredibly high standards of those who have held this post before me.”

He acknowledged the challenges ahead by stating, “There are difficult and challenging times ahead but Duncan, Robert, and I have been given a clear mandate by members to represent them, and we are honoured to carry their message forward.” This demonstrates his understanding of the pressing issues within the agricultural sector while also highlighting the team’s readiness to tackle them.

Connon further emphasized the strength of the newly formed leadership team, saying, “I believe we have a top table team, who, backed by the members, staff, and secretaries have the vision to deliver a sustainable and profitable future for Scotland’s farmers and crofters and the generations to come.” His forward-looking perspective is crucial for fostering a sense of optimism within the farming community.

Connon also took a moment to recognize his predecessor, stating, “My predecessor Martin Kennedy has been an incredible servant for Scottish agriculture and his passion and commitment make him an incredibly tough act to follow.” This remark not only pays tribute to Kennedy’s contributions but also establishes a standard for Connon’s leadership.

In addition to recognizing Kennedy, Connon extended congratulations to fellow candidates, specifically mentioning Alasdair Macnab for his participation in a hard-fought campaign. “Although missing out, I also congratulate my fellow vice president Alasdair for the part he played in a hard-fought campaign and the outstanding shift he has put in as a vice president representing our members.” He further commended Mike Davis, acknowledging his courage for running for the vice-presidential role, stating, “I hope NFU Scotland can continue to rely on his enthusiasm, support, and advice for years to come.”
