In a strategic move, Canada’s McCain Foods has announced a review of its UK operations, proposing the closure of a fries factory. The company is looking to discontinue production of Fries To Go, a line of microwave fries outside of the McCain core range.

The Fries to Go product range is currently manufactured exclusively at the McCain facility in Grantham, Lincolnshire, making it the only product produced at the site. If the closure goes ahead, it would impact 115 employees.

McCain stated that the decision was part of a broader review aimed at ensuring the sustainability, efficiency, and customer focus of the business. This comes after a recent investment of £215 million ($276 million) into its UK manufacturing facilities.

Jillian Moffatt, regional president at McCain Foods’ Great Britain and Ireland business, expressed gratitude to the Grantham site team for their contribution over the 40-year history of the company. She emphasized the commitment to supporting all colleagues during the consultation period.

Earlier this year, McCain acquired Irish plant-based frozen-food company Strong Roots, continuing a strategic move initiated in 2021 with a minority stake purchase. Strong Roots will now operate as a separate business unit under McCain.

Looking to strengthen its presence in France, McCain announced plans to invest over €350 million ($378 million) in developing production facilities and enhancing competitiveness in the region.
