Plant-Based Meal Replacement Brand Sperri Launches in the U.S.

Plant-Based Meal Replacement Brand Sperri Launches in the U.S. dairy alternatives, Vegetarian and Vegan Food and Beverage Business

Sperri, a Canadian company specializing in plant-based meal replacement beverages, has recently received new funding aimed at supporting its expansion into the US market. This financial boost was spearheaded by Nàdarra Ventures, a Canadian venture capital fund, with additional backing from Invest Nova Scotia, the provincial business development agency.

The Halifax-based brand has just established a foothold in the US by utilizing a direct-to-consumer (D2C) approach through online retailer Amazon.

Sperri’s co-founder, Gregg Curwin, emphasizes the company’s commitment to scientifically backed medical nutrition, stating, “Our products are grounded in scientific research leading to effective medical nutrition, and the ethos of Sperri is to inspire change within our conventional healthcare systems.” He further adds, “We are rooted in the belief that food is medicine, and that not only Nova Scotians, but everyone throughout North America, needs that more than ever.” Curwin believes that Sperri products, which are accessible and effective, will significantly support primary care treatment—especially during a time when the healthcare system is under substantial pressure.

Founded in 2019, Sperri is recognized as Canada’s first plant-based meal replacement brand, with products available through retailers such as Loblaws, Sobeys, Amazon, and their own online store. The product range includes popular flavors like chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla maple.

Malcolm Fraser, managing partner at Nàdarra Ventures, highlighted the significance of this investment, stating, “This investment represents our focus on sustainable, natural product innovations that create industry-leading returns while generating measurable impacts on the health of our population and planet.”

Co-founder Dr. Mary Lynch, a physician and pain management specialist, noticed that many of her patients required meal replacements for proper nutrition but often faced challenges with existing options due to high processed sugars, dairy, gluten, and soy protein. This observation spurred her to co-launch Sperri, aiming to provide healthier alternatives for those in need.

In the ever-evolving food and beverage industry, understanding consumer trends is crucial. Eating habits are shifting towards more plant-based options, as consumers increasingly prioritize health and sustainability. Sperri’s innovative approach aligns with these trends, ensuring that its offerings resonate with the growing demand for healthy, accessible, and effective meal solutions.
