Sweets from the Earth (SFTE) has acquired the production and distribution rights for the US dairy-free brand Tofutti in Canada. The deal, expected to be finalized on 27 June, will see SFTE taking over Tofutti’s rights in nine Canadian provinces and three territories. Distribution in Quebec will remain with a local company due to existing arrangements.
Tofutti’s Canadian operations, previously managed by Tofutti-Cholac Foods in Barrie, Ontario, will now be integrated into SFTE’s operations. The dairy-free baker emphasized that there are no plans to alter current manufacturing relationships.
Ian Hawes, president of Tofutti-Cholac Foods, assures a seamless transition, ensuring continuous availability of products in retail and online platforms. Tofutti, established in Manhattan in 1981 and now based in New Jersey, offers a range of plant-based cream cheese, dips, sour creams, and desserts, serving markets in the US, Australia, Israel, Mexico, and Panama.
SFTE sees this acquisition as an opportunity to expand its product portfolio and strengthen its presence in the Canadian plant-based market. The company plans to introduce new Tofutti products tailored to local preferences, including new flavors, products, and formats.
As SFTE looks to diversify, it intends to continue producing Tofutti’s dairy-free range, such as Cuties ice cream sandwiches and dairy-free sour cream. The company, known for its allergen-friendly and sugar-free bakery items, operates under brands like First Food Organics, Kool for School, and Shockingly Healthy.
In addition to the recent Tofutti acquisition, SFTE acquired gluten-free biscotti brand Tutti Gourmet last year, expanding its product offerings. Marc Kadonoff, vice president and co-CEO of SFTE, is enthusiastic about leveraging the company’s distribution network to introduce Tofutti’s products to the Canadian market.”
