Kale Foods Acquires Plant-Based Brand Färsodlarna Food and Beverage Business

Kale Foods has made a significant move in the food and beverage industry by acquiring the Swedish plant-based brand Färsodlarna from investment company Novax.

The financial details of this acquisition, which also encompasses Färsodlarna’s retail operations, remain undisclosed. However, this strategic step underscores Kale Foods’ commitment to consolidating its position in the Nordic market for sustainable, plant-based food.

In a recent statement, Kale Foods emphasized the importance of this acquisition in enhancing their footprint within the food and drink business. Conny Swahn, CEO of Kale Foods, described this transaction as “a direct continuation of our outlined M&A strategy.” He elaborated that incorporating Färsodlarna into Kale Foods not only diversifies their retail offerings but also fosters synergies in distribution, marketing, and sales.

Färsodlarna is renowned for offering a variety of frozen meat alternatives crafted from legumes and rapeseed. Their product line includes veggie meatballs, burgers, and formable mince, all promoted as additive-free and clean-label.

Swahn recognizes the “enormous potential” for expanding the brand further. He shared insights with Just Food, stating, “Through the acquisition, our ambition is to continue developing the plant-based category. By adding the brand to Kale Foods’ portfolio, we simultaneously create synergies in sales, marketing, and distribution.” He asserted the strategic significance of this deal in advancing the entire category of plant-based products within Swedish grocery retail, aligning seamlessly with their long-term objective to cultivate a leading platform for premium plant-based brands via targeted acquisitions.

Kale Foods operates under Kale United, established in 2018 to invest in companies committed to animal-free value chains. Oddgeir Hole, CEO of AB Svenska Färsodlarna, expressed pride in Färsodlarna’s journey, noting their success in establishing Swedish-grown proteins within the market. He believes Kale Foods is ideally positioned to nurture and advance Färsodlarna, given their infrastructure, passion, and ecosystem.

In addition to Kale Foods, Kale United has notable investments in alternative food companies, including the U.S. alt-meat firm Livekindly and Spain’s Heura Foods. Heura Foods recently announced that it achieved EBITDA profitability for the first time in the first quarter, a noteworthy achievement for a segment facing challenges like slower growth and heightened investor scrutiny. Despite this progress, Heura Foods is still working toward net profitability, a milestone they anticipate reaching next year.

This acquisition reflects the ongoing trends in the food and drink consumer landscape, where demand for plant-based options continues to rise. As the industry evolves, Kale Foods positions itself at the forefront, responding to consumer trends and driving innovation in sustainable food solutions.
