Spanish ice-cream company Grupo Alacant has announced its acquisition of Irish counterpart Silver Dairy Ventures, commonly referred to as Silver Pail. This move underscores significant trends in the food and beverage industry, emphasizing the ongoing consolidation within the food and drink business.
Grupo Alacant, also known as European Icecream Investments, operates as a subsidiary under the global private-equity group InvestIndustrial. This acquisition reflects a strong strategy to enhance growth and innovation as consumer preferences evolve in the dynamic food and drink consumer trends landscape.
Although the financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, Grupo Alacant anticipates that the merger will generate combined revenues of approximately €300 million ($353 million) annually. This figure highlights the potential for substantial market presence in the competitive food and beverage sector.
Silver Pail, headquartered in Fermoy, County Cork, stands as one of Ireland’s largest ice-cream producers. The company specializes in creating premium ice-cream products for a prestigious portfolio of retailers, brand partners, and foodservice operators. Its diverse product range includes ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet, catering to both private-label clients and its proprietary brand, The Creamery, which is sold in Irish retail settings.
At their Fermoy production facility, which employs around 100 individuals, Silver Pail possesses the capacity for significant growth. This aspect is crucial as the food and drink industry continues to adapt to changing consumer demands.
Per Harkjaer, chairman of Grupo Alacant, stated, “We are convinced that this transaction will allow us to bring substantial value-add to our customers by combining our historical production expertise with Silver Pail’s local presence and relationships.” Additionally, he expressed intentions to invest in Silver Pail’s facilities and workforce, ensuring the organization remains competitive in the ice-cream sector.
The acquisition will assist Grupo Alacant in accelerating its international strategy, particularly in the attractive UK and Irish markets. Furthermore, it positions the company to enhance its service to its blue-chip clientele and fortify collaborative research and development efforts.
To maintain stability, “key members” of Silver Pail’s management will remain with the company, ensuring smooth operations and continuity for employees, customers, and suppliers. The transaction is set to be finalized within the first half of 2026.
Paul Condon, sales director of Silver Pail, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are very enthusiastic about our partnership with Grupo Alacant and believe this partnership will allow Silver Pail to become a leading player in the region for years to come supported by Grupo Alacant’s production expertise and broad product portfolio whilst remaining true to the qualities that make this business unique.”
This strategic acquisition further solidifies Grupo Alacant’s position in the food and beverage industry, following a previous agreement with InvestIndustrial to acquire the Spanish ice-cream producer. Grupo Alacant, based in Alicante, specializes in private label and co-manufacturing for branded players. The company operates four production facilities across Alicante, Murcia, and Madrid, employing around 875 people, affirming its robust standing in the food and drink business landscape.
