Gressingham Group, a prominent duck supplier in the UK, has successfully acquired Central Foods, a local foodservice distributor, for an undisclosed amount. This strategic move aligns with Gressingham’s growth strategy in the food and beverage industry.
Central Foods, located in Northamptonshire in the East Midlands, boasts annual revenues exceeding £50 million ($60.9 million). The company specializes in supplying a diverse range of frozen food products, including burgers, sausages, desserts, and plant-based options, to wholesalers and hospitality establishments across the UK. Since its inception in 1996, notable clients such as Bidfood, Brakes, Whitbread, and Greene King have benefited from its offerings.
Founded in Suffolk in 1971, Gressingham Group has established itself as a leading supplier of duck products to major retailers and the foodservice sector. The acquisition of Central Foods is poised to enhance Gressingham’s position within the food and drink business, creating opportunities for collaborative growth.
According to MHA Corporate Finance, the advisory firm managing the deal, Gressingham was chosen as a partner for Central due to the strong alignment of values and culture, as well as its solid market reputation. Firm partner James Lawson stated, “Our process garnered interest from a number of potential strategic acquirers on an international basis; however, Gressingham Group’s complementary UK market reputation and similar culture set it apart.”
The founders of Central Foods, Gordon and Alison Lauder, will continue to be involved in operations post-acquisition. They expressed their view: “We believed it would be a challenging brief to identify a partner that would complement Central Foods’ business, safeguard our culture, and offer security and progression opportunities for our staff.”
William Buchanan, a director at Gressingham Group, commented on the acquisition: “We are excited to bring Central Foods into Gressingham Group. The business opens up a new market category for us and its reputation for excellent products and service complements our existing presence in the foodservice sector. We look forward to continuing to make frozen food wholesalers’ lives easier.”
As consumer preferences continue to evolve in the food and drink industry, this acquisition reflects broader food and drink consumer trends. Companies are increasingly seeking ways to diversify their offerings and expand their reach in response to changing market dynamics. This aligns well with the emerging trends observed in the food and beverage industry, where innovation and adaptation remain key to success.
