German Meat Giant Tönnies to Rebrand as Premium Food Group Tönnies Food and Beverage Business

German meat producer Tönnies Group will be rebranded as Premium Food Group starting next year. This strategic shift reflects the company’s evolution from a traditional meat processor to a more diversified food manufacturer, aligning with the latest trends in the food and beverage industry.

Under the new branding, the Tönnies name will be exclusively connected to the company’s meat production segment. Notably, the signage at the cold storage facility located at the headquarters in Rheda-Wiedenbrück will transition to the PFG logo next year.

Maximilian Tönnies, a shareholder, remarked, “The structural transformation process, which has now resulted in the new name of the holding company, was initiated years ago. In doing so, we are positioning our company for the future. We want to ensure that the business areas make decisions even faster and act more independently: Each area is already its own company.”

Founded in 1971, Tönnies has expanded from a small butcher’s shop to become one of Europe’s leading meat producers. With over 15,000 employees, the family-owned business supplies a diverse array of food products to millions of consumers on a daily basis.

In addition to its well-known meat and sausage products, Tönnies produces and markets plant-based items, convenience foods, animal feed, sauces, soups, and various by-products, including proteins, fats, and flours. Furthermore, the company provides raw materials to the pharmaceutical and biofuel sectors, operates cold storage facilities, and runs a logistics company specializing in fresh and ultra-fresh food items.

In September, Tönnies made headlines by reaching an agreement to acquire beef assets in Germany from its Netherlands-based counterpart, Vion. Additionally, the group invested in the fermentation startup Nosh in August, underscoring its commitment to innovation in the food and drink business.

In March, Tönnies announced the closure of one of its export packaging divisions for the Asian market, affecting approximately 140 jobs. This department, located at Tönnies’ facility in Weißenfels, Saxony-Anhalt, has been part of the organization since 1990, employing around 2,200 individuals as the company’s second-largest slaughterhouse.

Overall, these developments highlight Tönnies’ adaptability in responding to emerging food and drink consumer trends while positioning itself for future growth in the evolving food industry landscape.
