Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, recently signed legislation that prohibits the sale of lab-grown meat in the state. In response to the ban, DeSantis stated, “we are fighting back against the global elite’s plan to force the world to eat meat grown in a petri dish or bugs to achieve their authoritarian goals.” He further added that the state will continue to support its local farmers and ranchers to “save our beef.”

Josh Tetrick, CEO of cell-based meat group Good Meat, expressed disappointment in the ban, stating, “This is a loss for your state.” Florida’s commissioner of agriculture, Wilton Simpson, described the ban as “a tremendous step in the right direction,” emphasizing that lab-grown meat undermines the state’s proud traditions and prosperity.

The Florida government has allocated a $6 million grant to Hardee County to build a 40,000 square foot warehouse, focusing on developing jobs and infrastructure in the local agricultural and meat industry. Notably, Florida is not the only state pursuing a ban on lab-grown meat. Alabama and Texas have also introduced similar bills.

In the realm of cultivated meat production, challenges in scaling up production have been observed. Good Meat and Upside Foods received FDA approval to sell lab-grown chicken in the US last June. Despite this, manufacturers, like Upside Foods, have encountered obstacles in expanding production capacities and commercial plans.

In conclusion, the cultivation of lab-grown meat faces uncertainties and challenges, such as high production costs and limited volumes. However, industry leaders affirm the potential for growth and hope to see larger food companies engage in the sector to accelerate the process.
