This strategic move, carried out for an undisclosed sum, allows Gourmet Italian Food to take full control of the business, enabling the company to strengthen its portfolio and expand internationally by capitalizing on export opportunities. With 60% of its sales coming from exports, particularly in the US, Gourmet Italian Food is keen on further internationalization.
Alcedo, a private-equity firm supporting Gourmet Italian Food, facilitated the purchase from the Birolo family, who will remain involved as investors. Co-founders Silvano and Mario Birolo will continue to serve as co-CEOs. The acquisition of Firma Italia will present a growth opportunity for Gourmet Italian Food, with the consolidated turnover expected to reach EUR130m ($141.8m), considering Firma’s annual turnover of approximately EUR30m. Filippo Nalon, a partner at Alcedo, expressed confidence in the group’s future development, stating that the acquisition not only enriches Gourmet Italian Food’s product offering with quality dehydrated ready meals but also accelerates the internationalization process.
The co-CEOs of Firma Italia, Silvano and Mario Birolo, anticipate forging valuable commercial synergies, particularly in foreign markets where Firma has established relationships with leading brands in large-scale distribution. Firma Italia specializes in the production of dehydrated ready meals, including lasagne, risotto, sauces, and soups. Its primary focus is on private-label products for major retail chains.
Gourmet Italian Food originated from a collaboration between Alcedo and another Italian private-equity firm, FVS, merging Eurochef Italia and foodservice supplier La Gastronomica. In 2021, the company made strategic acquisitions, including the Veneto-based ready-meals manufacturer Cucina Nostrana and a majority interest in snacks and bakery business Fabian. Additionally, Gourmet Italian Food owns other well-known brands such as bakery manufacturer Deppieri.
The Firma Italia acquisition marks a milestone for Gourmet Italian Food under Alcedo’s leadership, as the company has continuously achieved significant growth.
