Calbee, a Japan-based snacks group, has announced its acquisition of a majority 58% stake in Hodo, a US-focused tofu manufacturer.
This strategic move marks Calbee’s entry into the burgeoning US plant-based food market. The company aims to accelerate the growth of its international “health and food” businesses through this acquisition.
Moreover, Calbee revealed that Sagamiya Foods, another Japan-based tofu manufacturer, will acquire a 10% interest in Hodo, facilitating a collaborative effort in the US market.
Calbee’s CEO, Makoto Ehara, remarked, “As demand for sustainable foods grows, tofu is increasingly valued by health-conscious consumers. Its high plant-based protein content and minimal processing make it particularly appealing in the US market, which is driven by health and environmental concerns.”
Ehara further emphasized, “Our vision at Calbee is to build a global portfolio of foods that are enjoyable and meaningful.”
This acquisition aligns with Calbee’s three-year transformation plan initiated in February 2023, which focuses on overseas expansion, particularly in the US, and the development of its “food and health” business.
Founded in 1949, Calbee produces breakfast cereals alongside snacks. With its headquarters in Chiyoda City, the company operates manufacturing facilities in several regions, including the US, China, the UK, and South Korea.
Calbee’s statement also indicated that Sagamiya will provide “technical support to promote and expand tofu culture in the US.”
According to the food maker, “Through Hodo’s strong foundation and unique product offerings in the US, and Sagamiya’s industry expertise, Calbee will address the growing consumer demand in the food and health space while developing new market opportunities.”
Hodo acknowledged these dual stakes in its own statement. Based in Oakland, California, the company supplies both retail and foodservice sectors.
Founded in 2004, Hodo also offers a diverse portfolio of plant-based foods, including nuggets, veggie burgers, and egg replacement products.
Hodo’s founder, Minh Tsai, stated, “We blend tradition and innovation to create foods for consumers who are looking for healthier options but don’t want to compromise on taste. We are excited for Calbee’s vision and their commitment to offer better-for-you foods to consumers.”
