Plukon Food Group, a Netherlands-based poultry major, has recently acquired the assets of Polish peer Algas SP in a strategic acquisition to strengthen its position in the European poultry market. This move will enhance Plukon’s capacity to supply high-quality fresh and frozen poultry products to retail and foodservice customers in Poland and various European markets. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Following the acquisition, Plukon will take over Algas’s slaughterhouse and processing facilities near Katowice in southern Poland. This deal marks Plukon’s third acquisition in the past twelve months, following investments in Dutch poultry business JA Ter Maarten and Spanish chicken major Redondo.

Szczepan Szatan, a spokesperson for the Szatan family, founders of Algas, expressed excitement about the partnership with Plukon, citing the opportunities to accelerate growth and leverage Plukon’s resources and expertise. The Szatan family will still be involved in business operations at their abattoir and processing factory.

Plukon CEO Kees Kraijenoord highlighted the benefits of the acquisition, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Algas and the Szatan family within our group and to realize synergies arising from our combined assets and capabilities.” With Algas being a prominent player in Poland’s poultry sector, this acquisition is expected to drive further growth and expansion opportunities for both companies.

Plukon, headquartered in Wezep, has a strong presence in the food and beverage industry, producing a variety of poultry products, meals, salads, and meat alternatives. Their customer base includes retailers and foodservice operators across Europe. With thirty production sites in Europe and a workforce of 9,500 employees, Plukon reported an annual turnover of €3.2bn in 2023.

This acquisition reinforces Plukon’s commitment to growth and leadership in the European poultry market, signaling a transformative chapter for both companies. The collaborative efforts between Plukon and Algas are set to drive innovation and success in the food and drink industry, aligning with current consumer trends and industry developments.
