FareShare is urging manufacturers in the food industry to step up and support charities facing an unprecedented surge in demand for their services in the UK.

During the 2022-23 financial year, FareShare, the largest UK charity combating hunger and food waste, successfully distributed nearly 128 million meals, equivalent to four meals every second, to charities throughout the UK that serve vulnerable communities.

However, 90% of the charities and community groups receiving food from FareShare reported a significant increase in the number of people seeking assistance. Despite continuous support from food industry partners, FareShare’s network is struggling to meet the escalating demand.

FareShare stated, “As the cost of living continues to rise, the demand for services provided by charities and community groups is skyrocketing. Many of these organizations believe their day-to-day operations will suffer greatly without an adequate supply of food.”

The company already collaborates with over 850 partners in the food industry to distribute unused, edible surplus food to those in need through a nationwide network of charities and community groups.

According to a recent survey among charities that receive food from FareShare, more than half expressed their need for additional ambient and chilled food, while nearly half requested more frozen food supplies. This shows that all sectors within the food industry have the opportunity to provide support.

Lindsay Boswell, CEO of FareShare, expressed gratitude to the existing supporters in the food industry who go above and beyond to provide surplus food. However, he emphasized that demand continuously surpasses supply. FareShare urgently requires additional food from new sources in all regions of the UK to bolster their supplies.

Boswell added, “Ongoing supply chain challenges, the conflict in Ukraine, and soaring energy costs are all factors impacting the availability of surplus food for redistribution. We encourage food industry businesses that are not yet collaborating with FareShare to consider donating their surplus food to us, as it will be instrumental in enabling charities and groups to continue providing vital services within their communities.”
