The new 1800 square feet store offers an extensive fresh range. Additionally, it features an in-store bakery that provides freshly baked bread and a hot drinks machine. Customers can also benefit from convenient services such as a free ATM. Moreover, the store proudly showcases a variety of local products including eggs sourced just six miles away.
Prior to its transformation into a store, the building served as a garden centre. Recognizing an opportunity to cater to the local community, retailers Paul McKenna and Graeme Wilson undertook the project. The nearest supermarket is a 40-mile round trip, making this new store a valuable addition to the area. By providing an array of choices, competitive prices, and essential services, it aims to fulfill the needs of local people.
Collaborating closely with the Budgens team, a substantial investment of £650k has been made to enhance the store. The renovation process involved a complete strip-down of the stone-built building. This included extensive excavation of the floor and thorough rewiring and re-plumbing. These efforts were undertaken to optimize the store’s potential as a modern convenience store.
Furthermore, the store actively promotes community engagement by sponsoring various local sports clubs, including Wooler’s Football, Cricket, Lawn Bowls, Tennis, and Golf clubs.
Expressing his satisfaction, Paul McKenna states, “I am truly proud of the results achieved through the store’s renovations. Not only have the competitive prices allowed me to maintain a good margin, but they have also enabled me to provide locals with an expanded range of products. Many of these products are locally sourced, which gives me a fantastic feeling. Additionally, I have been able to provide employment opportunities to eleven locals, which is a significant achievement.”
