For the third consecutive year, Antalis has partnered with Brief Cases for the Smart Luxury Packaging competition, in collaboration with Norwich University of the Arts. This exciting competition is integrated into the university’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design course and provides a challenging brief that tests the students’ skills. This year’s focus was on creating exceptional luxury packaging for the confectionery sector, using Antalis’ range of sustainable paper and paperboard materials.

The main objective of the Smart Luxury Packaging – Confectionery Sector brief was to explore how to create outstanding packaging designs that stand out on the shelf, reflect luxury, and convey a message of sustainability. After careful evaluation by a panel of 10 industry professionals, the winning projects were selected based on criteria such as packaging design, commercial viability, and brand strength. We are thrilled to announce that Millie Lumley’s ’30 Hour Chocolate Liqueurs’ concept, inspired by a treasured family clock, was chosen as the gold-winning project. Florence Warne’s ‘Sister Pralines’ and Maddison Whittaker’s ‘HUDU’ were awarded silver and bronze, respectively.

Designed as a celebration of time, the ’30 Hour Chocolate Liqueurs’ packaging beautifully symbolizes the antique clock theme. The packaging contains 30 rum-flavored chocolate liqueurs, each aged between 1 year to 30 years. To bring this concept to life, Millie selected Performa Light CarbonZero, an environmentally friendly cartonboard with a triple-coated topside for a top-quality printing finish. For wrapping the individual chocolates, she chose MetsäBoard prime FBB EB, a fully compostable and recyclable material with an eco-barrier that minimizes grease permeation. Additionally, the accompanying leaflet features a textured matt finish using Rives Tradition 100% Recycled Bright White, adding a contrasting touch to the design.

Steve Chappell, Graphical Board Development Manager at Antalis, expressed his delight in sponsoring this competition for the third year in a row. He commended the students for their exceptional talent, emphasizing their significant role in shaping the future of the packaging industry.

Veronica Heaven, founder of Brief Cases, also shared her enthusiasm for the competition and praised Millie’s ’30 Hours Chocolate Liqueurs’ for its outstanding luxury packaging. She expressed her hope to see the brand on store shelves soon.
