The SÜDPACK Group has achieved another substantial reduction in its operational carbon footprint across Scopes 1 and 2, while continuing to advance its ambitious Scope 3 objectives. This progress is built on a consistent, values-led strategy that combines technological innovation, cooperation throughout the value chain, and the integration of sustainability into every area of the organization.
As a producer of plastic films and packaging solutions for food, non-food, pharmaceutical and medical products, as well as technical applications, SÜDPACK recognizes its considerable responsibility for climate protection. Through its commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and therefore to the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal, the family-owned company has established validated near-term targets for Scopes 1, 2 and 3.1 through to 2030. The Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) is a central performance indicator and management instrument, supplying dependable emissions data to measure progress and identify additional opportunities for carbon reduction.
Strong progress against the 2021 baseline
SÜDPACK’s latest CCF demonstrates continued progress in carrying out its climate strategy. Total CO2e emissions in 2025 were 21% below the 2021 baseline. Direct emissions and emissions from purchased energy, covered by Scopes 1 and 2, fell by 73%. SÜDPACK’s goal is to achieve a 76.3% reduction in these emissions by 2030.
Emissions from Scope 3.1, which includes purchased goods and services, declined by 16%, putting the company on the path toward its 2030 reduction target of 25%. This source represents approximately two-thirds of SÜDPACK’s overall emissions, so even modest improvements can deliver a meaningful result. Continued focus on this area is therefore essential.
The Group’s CCF rose slightly by 3.91% compared with 2024. Even so, SÜDPACK achieved its annual reduction target in line with the SBTi pathway. The increase was partly associated with the positive growth in sales volumes, which directly affects the company’s structurally high product-related Scope 3 footprint, including emissions linked to purchased materials and product end of life. The expansion of the Erolzheim and Coulmer, France, facilities in 2025 also contributed. These investments, however, have created additional capacity for producing lightweight packaging materials designed in line with Design for Recycling principles. This supports improved sustainability and long-term resilience while creating further potential to lower the CCF.
Advancing product design, circularity and material efficiency
With sales expected to continue growing, SÜDPACK is concentrating on packaging concepts based on PP and PE that can be processed through established recycling streams. Lowering the weight of high-performance packaging materials is another important lever. Reducing the amount of material used per square metre of film saves resources, cuts emissions across transport and logistics, and can also reduce impacts at the end of the product’s life. In packaging printing, customer adoption of SÜPACK’s SPQ technology is increasing. The efficient printing process helped lower emissions associated with solvent use by approximately 9.5% compared with 2024.
However, the climate benefits delivered by these new packaging solutions ultimately depend to a significant degree on how quickly customers are prepared to transition to alternative formats.
Renewable power and improved energy performance
SÜDPACK is continuing to strengthen its energy management activities. Since early 2025, the Coulmer facility has been supplied with green electricity supported by guarantees of origin. As a result, every SÜDPACK production site in the EU now operates entirely on green electricity. Renewables currently represent 57% of the Group’s complete energy mix, including electricity and other energy sources. The company plans to raise this proportion to 88% by 2030, using measures such as sustainable energy procurement and further electrification, including the replacement of gas with renewable electricity.
Energy-efficiency initiatives have already lowered total energy consumption by 19% since 2021. Continued optimization has also reduced emissions from transport, despite increases in purchasing and sales volumes.
Digital tools provide greater climate transparency
SÜDPACK has introduced new software to manage the increasing complexity of sustainability requirements across its international operations. The solution gives the company improved visibility and control by bringing emissions data, objectives and performance updates together on one dashboard. It supports the identification of decarbonization measures, streamlines sustainability reporting, and helps standardize digital data collection and analysis processes across the organization.
