International logistics provider Rhenus Logistics is urging UK exporters to respond promptly to the European Union’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
The regulation took effect on 12 August and applies across every EU member state. It covers UK companies that place packaged products on the EU market, including businesses in the food and beverage supply chain.
The PPWR applies to all packaging introduced to the EU market, from consumer and retail packaging to transport materials including pallets, containers and crates.
Its purpose is to reduce the environmental impact of packaging while helping Europe lower its reliance on imported fossil fuels.
The rules require businesses to minimise packaging, ensure it is recyclable by design, increase the use of reusable formats and incorporate recycled content where stipulated.
Materials of concern, including heavy metals and so-called forever chemicals, must be excluded. Companies must also maintain the records and supporting evidence needed to demonstrate compliance.
Rob Mulligan, UK customs manager, The Rhenus Group, said: “The impact of PPWR is very much immediate.
“UK exporters must review packaging, verify supplier information and prepare and review compliance documentation and EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) obligations in each EU member state where goods are supplied.
“Compliance goes beyond recyclability, encompassing harmful substance restrictions, harmonised EU labelling, conformity documentation and EPR obligations.
“UK exporters must review packaging, verify supplier information and prepare compliance documentation supporting the packaging used in order to remain compliant.”
The requirements extend across the packaging and product value chain, covering manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, producers, fulfilment service providers, online sellers and product owners.
From 2028, exporters will also need to meet EU-wide requirements for harmonised sorting symbols, material-composition information and instructions to help consumers separate packaging waste correctly.
