This initiative marks a crucial advancement in B Corp’s dedication to enhancing food and drink sustainability by minimizing environmental impact.
The introduction of the 300g lightweight Burgundy bottle aims to be rolled out across approximately 3.5 million units this year—equivalent to around 596,000 cases. This shift is expected to significantly decrease CO₂ emissions from glass production by an estimated 82,000 kilograms annually.
Such efforts align with McGuigan Wines and its parent company, Australian Vintage, as they reinforce their broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions within the global wine industry.
By achieving a 25% reduction in bottle weight and a corresponding decrease in production-related emissions, this innovation empowers consumers to make environmentally responsible choices without sacrificing quality.
In February 2024, Australian Vintage proudly achieved B Corp certification, joining a global network of companies dedicated to fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable economy. As a B Corp, the company adheres to rigorous standards of verified social and environmental performance, ensuring a balanced approach between commercial success and positive impact.
The wines will be bottled at Greencroft Bottling—a modern facility renowned for its commitment to renewable energy. This facility primarily harnesses wind and solar power, featuring three wind turbines and a solar installation that produces 4.6 megawatts of energy, exemplifying best practices in sustainable packaging.
Designed by Verallia, a leading glass manufacturer, the 300g bottle is comprised of approximately 30% recycled glass and is specifically crafted for the wine industry. It maintains the classic Burgundy aesthetic while achieving a 25% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to the standard 400g glass bottle widely used across the sector.
By launching this innovative packaging solution ahead of the curve, McGuigan Wines and Australian Vintage are reinforcing their leadership in sustainable practices, responding to growing food and drink consumer trends for environmentally friendly products.
This development signifies a crucial milestone for McGuigan Wines in reducing the environmental footprint of wine production while maintaining the high standards for which it is globally recognized.
