Danish Crown intends to relocate its meatball production from its facility in the residential area of Copenhagen, with plans to eventually close the site. On April 16, the cooperative announced that a final decision regarding the Aalborg plant’s future remains pending. However, the company aims to transfer manufacturing to other locations in Denmark, with the Vejle facility in southern Jutland being the preferred site.
The organization noted that development opportunities at the Aalborg site, which has been in operation for nearly 60 years, are constrained due to the “dense” housing environment. Currently, the factory employs 140 individuals, most of whom will be offered positions at other Danish Crown facilities. The strategy involves a gradual transition of production out of Aalborg, targeting a closure date in 2028, when the plant will be sold.
Karolina Henriksen, the company’s executive vice president, stated, “It will be an ongoing process until 2028, and of course, it affects all the skilled employees that we currently employ at the factory.” She expressed optimism, adding, “Fortunately, we expect to be able to offer employment to most of the employees elsewhere in Danish Crown.” The company is also considering relocating staff to another Danish Crown site in Svenstrup, which specializes in sausage production.
Henriksen elaborated, “We are facing a major investment in a new production facility for our ready-to-eat meatballs, and in this connection, we had to decide where the production should be located in the future.” While production has historically occurred in the city center of Aalborg, the company believes that moving it out of town will provide the necessary space and development opportunities.
Moreover, earlier this year, plans for expanding the Vejle pork processing plant were announced, with operations expected to commence in October. This development represents part of a larger organizational restructure initiated by Danish Crown a year ago, which aims to divide the business into three distinct divisions: Danish Crown Industry, Danish Crown Foods, and Danish Crown UK. The Aalborg facility falls under the Danish Crown Foods division.
In the context of food and beverage industry trends, this strategic shift reflects evolving dynamics within the food and drink business, emphasizing the need for operational space and the adaptation to changing consumer preferences.
In conclusion, the impending move signals Danish Crown’s commitment to aligning its production facilities with current market demands and long-term growth strategies.
