Just Eat Takeaway.com is enhancing its collaboration with sustainable packaging leader, Huhtamaki, to introduce a new line of plastic-free takeaway boxes in ten European markets, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Spain.

This expanded initiative follows successful launches with Lieferando in Germany and Austria, effectively implementing Xampla’s innovative Morro Coating throughout Just Eat Takeaway.com’s European platform. This strategic move aims to enhance the portfolio of food and drink sustainable packaging options available to restaurant partners.

Morro™ Coating, developed by Xampla, a UK-based materials technology company, is incorporated into boxes manufactured by Huhtamaki, recognized for its commitment to sustainable packaging solutions.

The coating, derived from natural plant proteins and free from chemical modifications, offers the food delivery sector a high-performance, plastic-free alternative to conventional plastic coatings found in takeaway boxes.

These takeaway boxes are fully recyclable, compliant with the Single Use Plastic Directive (SUPD), and crafted from sustainably sourced corrugated paper. This ensures their place in the evolving landscape of food and drink packaging.

Engineered to accommodate a diverse array of foods and cuisines, the packaging maintains structural integrity and heat retention, effectively managing greasy or moist dishes that have often posed challenges for plastic-free solutions.

Endorsed as plastic-free by the National Physical Laboratory—the only food packaging coating to achieve this status—Morro™ Coating is compatible with existing recycling streams, facilitating Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) benefits and aiding brands in navigating the regulatory framework across Europe.

In contrast to traditional plastic coatings, paperboard packaging utilizing Morro™ Coating can be integrated into established waste management systems without necessitating plastic separation, streamlining the recycling process.

This launch empowers Just Eat Takeaway.com’s restaurant partners with regulatory-compliant packaging that excels in barrier performance, furthering their commitment to food and drink sustainable packaging.

By supporting partners in transitioning to sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics, Just Eat Takeaway.com aims to combat plastic pollution in the on-demand delivery sector. This rollout notably enhances Just Eat Takeaway.com’s array of sustainable packaging options, allowing restaurant partners across Europe to opt for plastic-free solutions for an increased variety of dishes.

Alexandra French, CEO of Xampla, stated: “Europe is moving fast on packaging regulation, and the demand for materials that can genuinely replace plastic has never been stronger. There is real regulatory clarity across these markets, strong environmental ambition, and a willingness to adopt new materials when they work.”

“For us, this expansion is about scale. We have proven Morro™ Coating works; now we are rolling it out across 10 European markets through one of the continent’s largest food delivery platforms.”

“If we want to replace plastic, we have to do it in high-volume, high-performance applications like food delivery. This rollout shows that natural materials can compete and win in exactly those environments.”

A spokesperson for Just Eat Takeaway.com remarked: “We are excited to be partnering with innovative companies that share our vision of eliminating single-use plastic waste and making responsible choices that create value for our partners and consumers.”

“Expanding our collaboration with Xampla marks a significant milestone in accelerating the adoption of plastic-free packaging across the on-demand delivery industry.”
