Sappi Europe is enhancing its role as a leader in sustainable packaging with the introduction of Guard Pro OHS and Guard Pro OMH. These innovative, recyclable mono-material papers provide high-barrier protection while ensuring efficient production processes. Specifically designed to aid brand owners in complying with stringent EU packaging regulations like the PPWR, these solutions present a paper-based alternative to plastic and multilayer foils, perfectly suited for today’s fast-paced manufacturing lines.

Both products will be prominently featured at FACHPACK 2025, taking place from 23 to 25 September, in Hall 4A, Stand 306, Nuremberg.

Two Solutions, One Goal: Performance with Sustainability

Guard Pro OHS is a heat-sealable, high-barrier paper ideal for applications such as flow-wraps, sachets, and pouches. This product offers robust protection against oxygen, water vapor, grease, and MOSH/MOAH, effectively extending shelf life while preserving aroma and product quality. Its enhanced mechanical properties also improve runnability on packaging machines.

This paper is available in two finishes—Natural (62, 72, and 92 g/m²) and Gloss (77, 87, and 102 g/m²). It meets standards for direct food contact and complies with toy safety regulations, making it suitable for both food and non-food packaging that requires secure seal integrity. Typical applications include snacks, dry foods, ice cream flow wraps, hygiene products, and children’s items, where safety, freshness, and compliance are paramount.

In contrast, Guard Pro OMH shares similar barrier properties with OHS but is specifically designed for cold-seal applications. This cost-effective solution is ideal for situations where heat sealing is unnecessary. With an improved oxygen barrier compared to OHS, Guard Pro OMH caters to a diverse range of food and non-food applications. Its exceptionally smooth surface also yields excellent conversion results in metallization, making it perfect for metal deposition and ultra-high barrier applications. The paper comes in an uncoated Natural version (60, 70, and 90 g/m²) and a Glossy version (75, 85, and 100 g/m²).

The choice between Guard Pro OHS and Guard Pro OMH provides packaging engineers with greater control over sealing methods, production speed, and material costs—without sacrificing recyclability or protection.

“With Guard Pro OHS and Guard Pro OMH, we’re giving the market greater flexibility and choice in selecting recyclable, high-barrier papers,” stated Filip van Ranst, Sales Director at Sappi. “These products help brands meet sustainability goals without compromising performance or production efficiency. From sealing technologies to barrier performance, we’re providing practical, paper-based solutions that address real-world production needs. Our customers can design packaging that is functional, efficient, and ready for recycling—without compromise.”

Additional Guard Innovations on Display

In addition to the high-barrier papers Guard Pro OHS and OMH, Sappi will showcase other functional barrier papers from its Guard portfolio.

Leading ice cream manufacturers are currently testing Guard Duo (formerly known as ICC). Initially developed for ice cream cone sleeves (105 gsm), this product is now also being trialed in a 115-gsm version for premium block-bottom bag applications.

Additionally, Guard Twist Gloss, a recyclable and wax-free twist paper for chocolate and confectionery, will also be presented. Following successful tests by leading packaging machinery manufacturers, its glossy side delivers excellent print performance and withstands the demands of twisting. Weighing in at 45 gsm, it is mildly grease-resistant and meets direct food contact requirements.

Sustainable Packaging with Proven Performance

Sappi’s Guard portfolio underscores its long-standing commitment to fiber-based, functional packaging. All Guard papers are available upon request as FSC Mix Credit (FSC™-C015022) or 100% PEFC (PEFC/07-32-76) certified, supporting the transition away from plastic and multi-material packaging toward recyclable, mono-material solutions.

The Guard portfolio is a crucial part of Sappi’s broader strategy to foster innovation in paper-based packaging across various categories, including food and drink packaging, food and drink sustainable packaging, hygiene, and premium retail.
