Mars Wrigley, the company behind popular chocolate brands such as Snickers, Milky Way, and Mars, has announced its plan to remove plastic packaging from its chocolate bars. Last year, the company switched to paper-based flexible packaging for its products in Australia and New Zealand. Mars’ latest move follows Nestlé’s revamp of Quality Street and KitKat wrappers in October 2022.

Richard Sutherland-Moore, from Mars Wrigley UK research and development centre, stated that finding the right paper packaging solution with an adequate level of barrier properties was a challenging task. The main objective was to protect the chocolate while ensuring food safety, product quality, and integrity.

Andrew Flood, Tesco packaging development manager, revealed that Mars Wrigley’s initiative aligns with Tesco’s strategy of removing plastic and packaging from its business. This announcement is a significant step towards a sustainable future by some of the industry’s most prominent players.

With this move, Mars Wrigley sets an example for other companies in the industry to follow and make a shift toward eco-friendly practices. It is a small yet vital step in the right direction towards reducing plastic waste and contributing to a more sustainable environment.
