Parkside has collaborated with innovative food and drink brand SMUG to develop a 100% compostable crisp packet made from a certified home compostable laminate. This groundbreaking packaging is a game-changer in the world of food and drink packaging.

The pack, utilizing Parkside’s revolutionary Park2Natureâ„¢ material, offers an environmentally friendly solution as it can be disposed of in regular domestic compost heaps. Within just 26 weeks, it breaks down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass, leaving no harmful waste behind. Alternatively, it can be sent for industrial composting where decomposition occurs within 12 weeks.

SMUG, a new venture from cutting-edge Shoreditch-based food and drink marketing agency Merry Galelli, is launching its hand-fried potato crisps in the UK. Their debut flavor, Cacio e Pepe, reflects their trendy, independent spirit. With two more flavors planned for 2024, SMUG is set to make its mark in the competitive market.

Mark Shaw, Sales Account Manager at Parkside, expressed his excitement about the launch, stating that sustainable packaging is crucial for cutting-edge brands. He is delighted to collaborate with Merry Galelli on their innovative SMUG brand crisps, recognizing that today’s consumers value sustainability when making purchasing decisions in this highly competitive category.

The packaging employs Parkside’s innovative plant-based laminate in a duplex format, delivering an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of below 1.0. This ensures that the hand-cooked crisps retain their satisfying crunch and unique flavor throughout the supply chain.

Stephen Merry, Co-Founder at Merry Galelli, emphasized the importance of packaging in the new product launch. They believe the quality and taste of SMUG crisps will resonate with consumers, making it vital to have packaging that engages and encourages shoppers to try them. Parkside’s packaging not only complements the brand’s sustainability goals but also resonates with their target consumers.

Currently, SMUG crisps are distributed to selected independent outlets across London and Bristol, and soon in Manchester and Brighton. The crisps can be purchased now through the independent food brand retail app DELLI.
