Greiner Packaging has expanded its collaboration with Huel through the development of a functional, high-impact K3 cup for the brand’s new High Protein Ramen Noodle Cups. The product is now launching exclusively in Tesco stores throughout the UK.

Combining cardboard with plastic, the cup is engineered to meet the practical requirements of hot-meal preparation while creating strong shelf presence and reinforcing Huel’s distinctive brand identity. The development reflects several key food and beverage industry trends, including demand for convenient meal formats, more responsible food and drink packaging, and effective brand communication at the point of sale.

Designed for hot-meal convenience

Huel required a pack that could tolerate heat, remain comfortable to hold and deliver a compelling visual presentation. Greiner’s K3 packaging technology addresses each of these requirements.

The cardboard sleeve strengthens the overall structure, allowing the plastic component to use thinner walls and therefore reducing the amount of plastic required. It also provides a degree of thermal insulation, enabling consumers to prepare and eat the ramen directly from the cup with greater comfort.

Tim Urch, senior marketing manager at Huel, said the K3 solution offers “the perfect combination of premium shelf impact and consumer convenience… making hot meals more comfortable to handle and enjoy.”

This approach demonstrates how food processing technology and food manufacturing trends are influencing packaging development, particularly as brands seek practical formats that support convenience without compromising presentation or material efficiency.

More space for branding and product information

The outer wrap uses vivid colours, high-quality print and UV spot varnish to create a premium appearance that complements Huel’s visual identity. Its broad printable area also gives the brand greater scope to communicate its story, highlight nutritional benefits and explain preparation steps.

For a product entering a new category, this additional communication space is especially valuable. It supports food and drink marketing objectives while helping consumers understand the product quickly in a competitive retail environment. The design also responds to food and drink consumer trends, including demand for clear information, engaging packaging and easy-to-use meal solutions.

Encouraging responsible disposal

The K3 cup incorporates an integrated tear tab that helps consumers remove the cardboard sleeve from the plastic container after use. Disposal guidance is printed directly on the wrap, showing users how to separate and sort the components in line with local requirements.

By making the pack easier to dismantle, the design supports improved recycling behaviour and contributes to wider food and drink sustainability goals. At the same time, the sleeve remains an effective platform for post-purchase communication, carrying preparation advice, product information, brand content and disposal instructions.

Clear guidance is increasingly important as food and drink regulations and recycling systems continue to evolve across different markets. Packaging that combines practical functionality with straightforward communication can help brands support more consistent consumer behaviour.

Collaborative development from concept to launch

Huel and Greiner Packaging brought the project to market within demanding timescales through close coordination across the value chain. Their cooperation highlights the role of partnership in accelerating food and drink industry innovation and turning new product concepts into commercially ready formats.

Donna Cullen, sales manager at Greiner Packaging, said: “Huel wanted packaging that reflected the boldness of its new product. Together, we created a solution that delivers premium shelf impact, functionality and a packaging design that supports correct disposal after consumption, helping Huel make a strong first impression in an exciting new category.”

A platform for future growth

With Tesco serving as the exclusive launch partner, the K3 format provides Huel with a distinctive and practical packaging platform as the company expands its presence in hot-meal products. The solution combines consumer convenience, strong on-shelf visibility and disposal support in a format designed for future scalability.

The launch also reflects broader food distribution trends, as retailers and manufacturers look for packaging that can perform across modern supply chains while supporting brand differentiation. As food manufacturing trends, food and beverage industry trends and food and drink consumer trends continue to develop, packaging solutions that unite functionality, sustainability and communication will remain central to category growth.
