Mondi, Silbo, and EW Technology have recently formed a close partnership to facilitate the switch from plastic film to paper in the food packaging industry. Together, these companies have collaborated to upgrade Silbo’s pallet wrapping process with Mondi’s kraft paper Advantage StretchWrap, which offers a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option for packaging goods.
Silbo has installed the first EW Technology PaperWrap machine at its plant in Żory, Poland, bringing a complete reel of Advantage StretchWrap with no need to re-wind. Not only does this alternative provide robust protection during transportation, but it also helps to reduce waste. An independent assessment by Mondi has shown that Advantage StretchWrap outperforms standard plastic stretch film in environmental impact categories.
Marcin Śpiewok, CEO at Silbo, expressed his excitement for the company’s newfound reputation for sustainability. This development not only supports their sustainability goals but also benefits all customers and end-users. Bartosz Babicz, product manager for Advantage StretchWrap at Mondi, considers this a “huge move for the whole packaging industry,” helping to keep materials in circulation and reduce waste.
Advantage StretchWrap is made from responsibly sourced fibers and contains no plastic or coating. Rather, it is made from wood as a renewable resource and is fully recyclable in existing paper waste streams. According to Mondi, the larger dimensions of the Advantage StretchWrap reel mean that a replacement is only necessary every 400-600 pallets as opposed to every 40-80 pallets with plastic wrap, resulting in significant savings in both time and money.
Overall, this partnership showcases a sustainable solution to replace plastic film with paper in the food packaging industry. By using the latest technology and materials, we can achieve a more eco-friendly and cost-effective packaging solution.
