La Menorquina Expands Investment in Ice Cream Production Frozen, ice cream Food and Beverage Business

Ice cream manufacturer La Menorquina is making a significant investment in its operations in Spain, aiming to enhance its position in the ever-evolving food and beverage industry. The company is injecting over €15 million ($17.7 million) into expanding its facility located in Palau-solità i Plegamans, Barcelona.

This expansion will introduce a new production line, which La Menorquina describes as the largest investment in the plant’s history. Founded by Fernando Sintes in 1940, the company has been under the ownership of London-based Cheyne Capital Management since it acquired a 97.5% stake in 2020.

The new production line is designed to produce an impressive 30,000 ice creams per hour, translating to around 10 million liters annually. By the end of the year, this line will add 1,100 square meters to the current factory’s production area, which already boasts an output of 34 million liters across 22 lines.

La Menorquina emphasizes that “this line is unique in the world for its high capacity,” enabling it to produce chocolates, ice-cream sandwiches, and spirals all on one line. This innovative capability aligns with current food and drink consumer trends, highlighting the need for versatility in food and drink businesses.

The expansion is projected to create over 150 new jobs within the organization. Iván Leal, CEO of La Menorquina, stated, “This new line will allow us to continue serving our customers, increasing our efficiency and competitiveness, as well as reinforcing our position as one of the leading companies in the sector.” He further echoed the company’s commitment to the values instilled by its founder, including quality, innovation, approachability, and environmental respect.

Currently employing around 750 individuals, with more than 500 at the Palau-solità i Plegamans plant, La Menorquina is recognized as the largest ice cream factory in Catalonia and one of the largest in Spain. The company’s sales are expected to reach €131 million by 2025, with double-digit growth anticipated this year.

Moreover, La Menorquina exports to approximately 40 countries, including key markets such as the UK, Portugal, France, Italy, and the US. As the food and beverage industry trends continue to shift, La Menorquina’s strategic investments position it as a leader prepared to adapt.

In conclusion, this expansion marks a critical juncture for La Menorquina. The company not only reinforces its operational capacity but also strengthens its commitment to delivering quality products that align with evolving consumer trends.
