Allied Bakeries Enhances Investment in Transport and Logistics Operations

Allied Bakeries Enhances Investment in Transport and Logistics Operations Allied Bakeries, investment, Logistics, Operations, Transport Food and Beverage Business

Allied Bakeries is enhancing its logistics capabilities with the addition of new vehicles designed to deliver Kingsmill, Allinson’s, and retail partners’ own-label bakery ranges directly to customers’ stores and regional distribution centres. This operation will function around the clock, using a hub and spoke network that encompasses the entirety of the UK.

To support these new fleet additions, Allied Bakeries is implementing upgraded handheld terminals for drivers, aimed at optimizing delivery processes. Additionally, the company will deploy a new fleet management IT system, ensuring streamlined operations and increased efficiency.

Richard Hodgson, director of logistics and planning at Allied Bakeries, stated: “We make 25,000 deliveries a week, taking fresh bread and bakery goods to every corner of the country, and these new vehicles mean that we can continue to deliver the great service that our customers rely on.”

Effective and Efficient

“In addition to delivering our own Kingsmill, Allinson’s, and retailers’ own-label ranges, we’re also partnering with other bakers across the country to distribute their products more effectively and efficiently – benefiting the environment, our customers, and of course, consumers.”

The fleet will incorporate 32 low-profile DAF FTP XD 6×2 tractor units and 36 DAF XB 230 4×2 19-tonne rigid vehicles. These new vehicles leverage the latest technology to enhance road safety while reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Joe Watson, DAF Trucks national fleet sales manager, remarked: “The new DAF XB and XD trucks are being built at our Leyland Trucks assembly plant here in the UK to the exacting specification of Allied Bakeries to deliver maximum fuel and carbon efficiency, safety features to help protect both driver and other road users, and to provide a comfortable and practical working environment which I’m sure the drivers will appreciate.”

Vision for the Future

“It is exciting to be involved in the deployment of the zero-emission LF Electric 19-tonne rigid as part of Allied Bakeries’ vision for their future.”

This investment follows a recent collaboration between Allied Bakeries and Don-Bur to design a “new generation” of efficient, high-volume box van double-deck trailers, which were introduced to the fleet earlier this year.

Additionally, Allied Bakeries is conducting an electric truck trial from its London bakery. This trial aims to gather insights on how electric and other innovative technologies can contribute to reducing its carbon footprint and achieving net-zero goals.

Meanwhile, an investigation into GXO’s purchase of Wincanton has concluded that the deal could potentially reduce competition within the UK contract logistics services market.
