The landscape of food packaging regulations is evolving significantly, compelling manufacturers to navigate a complex array of operational objectives.

Contemporary packaging solutions must not only be entirely recyclable but also ensure robust product protection, feature eye-catching designs for retail appeal, and operate efficiently on existing high-speed production lines.

In response to these challenges, the adapa Group, a leader in flexible packaging, has unveiled its PaperFlowʳᵉ P-type. This innovative line of paper-based packaging is meticulously designed to achieve high circularity alongside industrial performance, offering brands a feasible way to shift from traditional multi-layer plastics while maintaining production efficiency.

Assured recyclability with superior barrier properties

This cutting-edge packaging solution has successfully met the stringent recyclability standards set by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), demonstrating compatibility with conventional paper recycling systems.

The PaperFlowʳᵉ P-type does not compromise product shelf life for sustainability; rather, it strikes a balance between high paper content and the necessary barrier performance for perishable food items. The product range offers three different paper weights: 70 gsm, 80 gsm, and 90 gsm to accommodate various product types.

To cater to diverse ingredient needs, adapa provides this material in both standard and high-barrier versions, making it ideal for a range of FMCG products, including snacks, chocolates, biscuits, and cereals. Additionally, to enhance usability for consumers, it can be delivered as pre-made pouches equipped with a convenient reclosable zipper.

Boosting shelf visibility and machinery integration

One prevalent issue when transitioning to paper alternatives is their tendency to crease or become marked during shipping and automatic handling processes. The PaperFlowʳᵉ P-type is designed with a unique structure that minimizes creases and unsightly folds, ensuring that finished products present a premium look at retail locations, thereby boosting brand perception in competitive markets.

For food manufacturers aiming to manage capital expenses, this innovative solution requires no costly alterations to existing packaging machinery. It incorporates a thin polypropylene (PP) layer that provides the necessary dimensional stability and heat-sealing reliability essential for high-demand industrial applications. Consequently, it can be effortlessly integrated into standard horizontal and vertical form-fill-seal (HFFS/VFFS) machinery.

Richard Bell, director of innovation at adapa Group, underscored the operational benefits of this balanced approach to sustainability and technical capability:

“PaperFlowʳᵉ P-type exemplifies our approach to developing packaging solutions that combine sustainability with technical performance. What makes this solution particularly valuable is that it enables customers to advance their circular economy goals while remaining fully compatible with existing production environments. The growing adoption of PaperFlowʳᵉ P-type demonstrates that circular packaging can also be practical and commercially viable.”

Recognition in the industry

The engineering principles behind this new line have recently earned adapa Group the prestigious Pap’Award in the “Circularity in Food Packaging” category, recognizing innovative packaging solutions that contribute significantly to the circular economy while fulfilling operational standards in industrial packaging.

According to adapa, the technology has already seen success with customers, including a specific project tailored to meet stringent APCOA criteria. These real-world applications have proven that validated circularity can harmoniously coexist with the technical demands, product protection, and processing speed necessary in modern manufacturing environments.

“This recognition reflects a broader shift in the packaging industry towards solutions that combine recyclability, performance, and economic viability,” Bell remarked. “With PaperFlowʳᵉ P-type, we demonstrate that recyclability, product protection, and processability can be successfully combined within one packaging solution.”
