Tesco has expanded the list of additives controlled in its own-label food range, increasing the total from 65 to 114 under its broader product reformulation programme.

The policy applies to ingredients that are either prohibited in Tesco-branded products or subject to enhanced controls and supplier requirements. Artificial colours, aspartame and monosodium glutamate are among the additives that are banned completely.

Own-label suppliers are expected to include additives only when they are necessary to protect food safety, maintain shelf life or support product quality. They must also use the lowest effective level.

Tesco said the latest measures build on reformulation activity launched in 2018 and reflect growing consumer interest in ultra-processed foods and ingredient transparency.

The retailer is also working to improve the accessibility of product information. Its website now features a dietary and lifestyle filter, enabling customers to find products made without additives.

Tesco added that it will keep assessing scientific research, food industry practices and policy developments associated with ultra-processed foods.

The company’s broader health strategy continues to follow the Eatwell Guide. It focuses on reducing the intake of products high in fat, salt and sugar, while supporting greater access to fruit and vegetables, whole grains, beans and pulses.
