Smithfield Foods to Shut Down U.S. Production Facility

Smithfield Foods to Shut Down U.S. Production Facility Smithfield Foods, WH Group Food and Beverage Business

US pork processor Smithfield Foods has announced the closure of another facility, this time in Springfield, Massachusetts. The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice with the state on February 6.

According to the notification, approximately 190 employees will be impacted by this closure, with layoffs scheduled to occur between April and September. Smithfield’s Springfield plant, which produces dry sausage, is expected to cease operations by August.

In a statement to Just Food, the WH Group subsidiary indicated that production would be shifted to other unspecified facilities with the capacity to maintain “the same high standards of quality.”

This closure comes on the heels of other recent developments. In July 2024, Smithfield announced plans to close a ham-boning plant in Altoona, Iowa, affecting 314 jobs. Production from that location is being relocated to sites in Illinois, South Dakota, and Nebraska.

Moreover, in October 2023, the company revealed its intention to shut down a pork processing operation in Charlotte, North Carolina, transferring production to the Tar Heel plant. This decision threatened 107 jobs in the area.

On a positive note, Smithfield made headlines earlier this year when it agreed to acquire the hot-dog brand Nathan’s Famous. The company has held licenses to manufacture and sell Nathan’s products in the US and Canada since 2014, a deal that extends to 2032. Shane Smith, the president and CEO of Smithfield, stated that this acquisition would leverage their manufacturing scale, marketing strength, and product innovation capabilities to enhance the brand.
