Plant-based food producer Beyond Meat has announced its Q2 trading results, revealing a significant decrease in net revenue of 30.5% compared to the previous year.

The company, headquartered in Los Angeles, made its entry into the UK market in 2018 and recently expanded its retail presence in 2022 by securing placements in 450 new stores.

For Q2, Beyond Meat’s net revenue stood at $102.1 million, a substantial decline of 30.5% from the same period in 2022. Additionally, the company reported a net loss of $53.5 million, a significant improvement compared to the net loss of $97.1 million reported in Q2 2022.

Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) resulted in a loss of $40.8 million, equivalent to -40% of net revenues. This represents a considerable decrease in comparison to the Adjusted EBITDA loss of $68.8 million (-46.8%) reported in Q2 2022.

One key factor contributing to the declining net revenue was a 23.9% decrease in the volume of products sold. Beyond Meat attributed this decline to weak demand within its US retail and US foodservice channels. Furthermore, changes in product sales mix and increased trade discounts also impacted net revenue, although these effects were partially offset by pricing changes.

Beyond Meat’s President and CEO, Ethan Brown, acknowledged the mixed results of the second quarter while emphasizing the company’s commitment to long-term growth. Brown cited operational efficiency improvements, including reduced operating expenses, COGS per pound, and overall cash consumption compared to the previous year.

Despite revising its net revenue outlook for the full year 2023, Beyond Meat anticipates a modest return to year-over-year top-line growth in the third and fourth quarters of that year. The company also expects a noticeable reduction in cash consumption and an increase in gross margin compared to the first half of 2023. Looking forward, Beyond Meat remains confident in the pivotal role that plant-based meat, specifically Beyond Meat’s products, will play in addressing the escalating climate crisis while delivering health benefits to consumers.
