In a move to cater to the local consumers’ preferences in the South Korean market, German plant-based food business Infinite Roots has collaborated with South Korean manufacturer Pulmuone. The partnership aims to develop innovative protein products tailored to the South Korean market. This initiative will be evaluated through consumer research and retail tests in selected channels in South Korea.

Based in Hamburg, Infinite Roots specializes in mycelium-based meat replacement products. Their collaboration with Pulmuone allows them to combine advanced technology in alternative-protein production with Pulmuone’s product development expertise. Following a successful test phase, both companies plan to expand their collaboration further.

Dr. Mazen Rizk, CEO of Infinite Roots, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating that it marks a significant step in the company’s mission to offer sustainable and tasty nutrition options, specifically focusing on culinary traditions and taste preferences in South Korea.

Rizk praised Pulmuone, describing the company as having market power and a visionary mindset. He added that Pulmuone’s expertise in the food industry complements Infinite Roots’ innovative approach to product development, setting new standards in alternative nutrition.

Kim Jin Hong, CEO of Pulmuone Foods, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating that it will lead to the development of environmentally friendly products that meet customers’ high expectations. He reiterated Pulmuone’s commitment to revolutionizing the food industry and shaping a more sustainable future.

Regarding the funding and support received by Infinite Roots, the company attracted investment from a consortium that includes the holding company of Germany-based confectionery maker Haribo. REWE Group, a major food retailer in Germany, also contributed to the Series B round, showing confidence in the business’s potential.

Founded in 1981 as a grocery shop in Seoul, Pulmuone evolved into a food producer with approximately 60 employees. The company’s focus on developing environmentally friendly products aligns with the growing trend of using mycelium, a protein derived from fungi, in plant-based food applications.
