German dairy group Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller has confirmed that it is holding discussions about a potential acquisition of fellow domestic producer Vogtlandmilch.

A representative of Müller told said that talks are taking place with Vogtlandmilch’s management and supervisory board regarding a possible takeover, which would include the company’s production site in Plauen.

“The discussions are at an early stage. Any potential transaction would also be subject to the necessary competition law approvals,” the spokesperson said, adding the company was “unable to comment further at this stage”.

Vogtlandmilch is based in Plauen, the main city of the Vogtland district in south-west Saxony, close to both Bavaria and the Czech Republic.

Founded in 1928, the dairy company employs roughly 150 people at its Plauen facility, according to information published on its website.

The manufacturer sources and processes milk from around 150 farms within an 80km area spanning Vogtland, western Saxony and eastern Thuringia.

Its portfolio covers quark, UHT milk, butter and buttermilk. These products are marketed under the Vogtlandweide and Sachsenland labels, alongside Joe Clever, which is supplied to schools in the region.

Vogtlandmilch’s website states that a recent capital investment modernised the Plauen plant. The project lifted bottling and quark manufacturing capacity, while also adding storage space and upgrading site infrastructure.

Müller has 20 manufacturing locations across Germany, the UK, the Czech Republic and Poland, making it one of Europe’s largest dairy companies.

In May, the group completed its acquisition of Berief Food, a producer specialising in dairy alternatives and tofu.

The company said the transaction would reinforce its presence in the “dynamically growing market” for plant-based food and beverages.

Within Germany, Müller markets vegan yoghurt and desserts under its own label. The Berief transaction broadened the group’s activity in plant-based alternatives and strengthened its position in the category.

Müller also acquired UK kefir producer Biotiful Gut Health last year, extending its reach into the gut-health segment.
