The innovative cuboid design merges the shelf appeal of traditional boxes with the advantages of flexible packaging, optimizing both material use and operational processes.

SunDance, a comprehensive provider of printing, packaging, and marketing solutions, has introduced its award-winning POUCH³™ flexible packaging system to the cereal sector, presenting brands with a contemporary alternative to the conventional bag-in-box packaging.

For over a hundred years, cereal packaging has predominantly featured a paperboard box encasing an inner bag. The POUCH³ concept revolutionizes this traditional packaging style with its patented cuboid flexible structure, offering the merchandising benefits of a box while enhancing material efficiency, branding options, and supply-chain operations.

“Cereal brands should not have to choose between strong shelf presence and packaging innovation,” stated Kandi Johansmeyer, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing at SunDance. “POUCH³ preserves the recognizable, space-saving shape that consumers and retailers are used to, while providing manufacturers with a versatile package that meets modern production, distribution, and marketing requirements.”

In contrast to standard stand-up pouches, POUCH³ retains a structured, box-like form and boasts six printable surfaces. This expanded printing area allows brands to showcase product advantages, recipes, sustainability initiatives, seasonal graphics, and various other messaging elements on the package itself.

SunDance offers digital printing capabilities for the POUCH³ system. This digital approach facilitates shorter production runs for limited-time offerings, seasonal varieties, holiday-themed packaging, retailer exclusives, regional campaigns, and market trials, enabling brands to update their packaging without the extensive production processes typically linked with traditional long runs.

The design reduces excess headspace while maximizing usable volume, enhancing case packing efficiency, pallet handling, storage in warehouses, and shipping logistics. Additionally, the single-film design simplifies the packaging structure. SunDance reports that POUCH³ utilizes approximately 30% to 40% less material compared to conventional stand-up pouches and can be manufactured using recyclable and post-consumer recycled materials, depending on specific product needs and performance criteria.

In 2026, POUCH³ garnered three prestigious accolades from the Flexible Packaging Association:

  • Highest Achievement Award
  • Gold Award for Packaging Excellence
  • Gold Award for Expanding the Use of Flexible Packaging

These awards highlight the package’s significant advancements in functionality, manufacturing processes, sustainability, and enhancing consumer experience.

“The cereal aisle is an ideal setting for this technology,” Johansmeyer remarked. “POUCH³ equips brands with a unique package featuring premium graphics and substantial shelf visibility while enabling more efficient use of space and materials. This presents a significant opportunity to modernize one of the most recognizable formats in grocery stores.”
