Finsbury Food Group Introduces Cake 'Bento Boxes' Food and Beverage Business

In a strategic move to innovate within the celebration cake sector, Finsbury Food Group has introduced what it claims to be the ‘UK’s first cake-only bento box’—the ‘Little Big Cake’.

Starting today (19 January), this product will be available exclusively at Tesco for a limited time of 12 weeks. The Little Big Cake aims to make trendy bento cake formats more accessible to consumers in the food and beverage industry.

Originally developed in South Korea, bento cakes consist of mini layered cakes that use the same high-quality ingredients as larger varieties. These cakes generally include a base, filling, decoration, and often feature a brief message. Their rising popularity, spurred by social media, has led to their global appeal.

Traditionally made to order, Finsbury Food Group seeks to offer a convenient option for shoppers, allowing them to pick up a bento cake during their weekly grocery shopping.

The inaugural offering in the Little Big Cake range, ‘Paint the Town Red Velvet’, includes four mini red velvet cupcakes adorned with cream cheese frosting and a drizzle of jam, alongside a larger version. Weighing in at 740g, the box retails for £14.

Targeting the ‘Insta’ generation of millennials and Gen Z, this product is designed not only for impulse purchases but also as an alternative gift solution. The packaging features a tag for personal customization, aligning with current food and drink marketing trends.

Finsbury believes that this new brand will enable them to respond swiftly to evolving consumer trends while facilitating innovation in flavor profiles throughout the various seasons.

“This launch reinforces Finsbury’s ambition to lead in bakery innovation. We want to be first to market, bring new ideas to shelves and excite shoppers with products that reflect changing tastes and lifestyles,” stated Ross Lowrey-Heywood, development innovation manager at Finsbury Food Group.

Kimberley Curtis, brand manager at Finsbury Food Group, emphasized, : “Little Big Cake is all about spreading joy, it started with a simple thought: a little cake can make a big moment. We’ve observed a surge in smaller occasion moments among consumers, and we wanted to create a cake perfect for this. Whether it’s a well done, a Happy Birthday, a girls’ night in, or even a ‘just because’ to brighten an ordinary day.”

“It’s versatile, it’s easy to share at a party or in the office, and it’s even easier to take home thanks to the way it’s portioned. Ultimately, Little Big Cake has been created with shareability, indulgence, and spontaneous celebration in mind, and our Paint the Town Red Velvet Little Big Cake is just the beginning.”
