Sappi has broadened its assortment of functional packaging papers by introducing a comprehensive array of heat-sealable solutions tailored for converters, printers, and brand owners seeking sustainable fiber-based alternatives to plastic.

The Seal family – which includes Seal Silk, Seal G Silk, Seal Pure Silk, Seal Natural, Seal Light, and Seal Lucent – addresses a wide range of applications and sealing requirements, facilitating seamless integration into existing packaging lines. This portfolio, ranging from 44 to 110 gsm and featuring diverse finishes such as OBA-free and translucent options, is meticulously designed to empower customers in selecting a grade that aligns with their packaging formats, processes, and visual specifications.

Amidst increasing pressures from regulations like the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), evolving customer expectations, and a global demand for recyclable packaging, companies must also maintain consistent sealing outcomes, robust mechanical strength, and compatibility with existing equipment. Moreover, total cost of ownership is crucial, as paper-based solutions need to rival those of plastic. The Seal portfolio is specifically developed to tackle these challenges, making the transition from plastic and composite materials to mono-material paper solutions more straightforward.

A portfolio built around flexibility and customer needs

Each Seal grade accommodates various production setups, printing methods, visual demands, and sealing strengths. This flexibility allows customers to choose papers that best fit their production lines, packaging formats, and performance criteria. Sappi is also prepared to meet customer-specific requirements, including OBA-free grades and unique surface characteristics.

Seal Silk and Seal G Silk are available in grammages of 50, 67, 77, 85, 95, 100, and 110 gsm, providing low-to-medium water vapor performance based on the grade. These papers integrate seamlessly with flexo and gravure printing. Seal Pure Silk (67 gsm) is OBA-free, catering to customers looking for a natural aesthetic or needing specific compliance features. Seal Natural (95 gsm) offers enhanced sealing strength and hot-tack performance. Additionally, Seal Light Gloss and Seal Light Natural come in 44 gsm (Natural) and 54 gsm (Gloss), accommodating flexo and gravure printing while offering a lightweight option for converters requiring heat sealing at lower grammages. Notably, Seal Lucent is offered in 44 and 54 gsm, ideal for applications benefiting from translucency, such as window packs or products that require partial visibility. “We’re seeing brand owners, converters and printers look for reliable ways to change their packaging without adding risk or cost,” mentions Michael Bethge, Sales Director Flexible Packaging. “They need practical choices rather than one fixed solution, along with technical support during the transition. The Seal range reflects that feedback and provides customers with a wide array of options.”

Reliable performance and robust print results

All Seal papers are engineered to ensure consistent sealing and smooth runnability. Their strong mechanical properties support stable processing and secure transport. Additionally, these papers yield precise print results, enabling brands to achieve a clear and distinctive visual presence on shelves. Sappi extends support during trial runs, providing insights into sealing temperatures, dwell times, and machine settings tailored to individual equipment and applications. With over a decade of experience in developing functional papers, Sappi collaborates closely with customers and OEMs on material transitions and novel packaging formats. This technical support extends through trial runs, wherein Sappi assists with optimizing sealing parameters and converting setups.

Packaging applications across primary and secondary use

The Seal range is suitable for both primary and secondary packaging where complex barrier structures are not necessary, and low to medium barrier performance is adequate (grade-dependent). Typical applications include:

  • Multi-packs for confectionery, including twisted products and Neapolitans
  • Pillow bags, sachets, stick packs, doypacks, and stand-up pouches
  • Food and non-food products requiring secure sealing without intricate barrier structures

These papers are designed as mono-material, enabling recyclability within the paper waste stream where appropriate collection and sorting systems are available. They serve as suitable replacements for PE-coated papers and many plastic-based laminates. The diverse range of grammages and finishes facilitates a smooth transition from existing solutions with minimal disruption.

A practical answer to sustainability pressure without added cost

Businesses seek materials that align with sustainability objectives while remaining cost-competitive. The Seal portfolio ensures reliable sealing for product protection, exceptional mechanical properties for smooth runnability, and clear print surfaces for effective brand differentiation. Leveraging Sappi’s extensive scale in specialty papers and its dedicated technical support, customers can navigate a secure and efficient path towards recyclable mono-material packaging.
