Sophie Throup Appointed Director General of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU)

Sophie Throup, the former head of agriculture at Morrisons, has been officially appointed as the Director General of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU). This strategic move comes as the NFU seeks to navigate pivotal changes in the agricultural sector.

Professional Background

Throup will transition to her role at the NFU after serving as the Senior Director at Myton Food Group since 2023. Her extensive experience encompasses various facets of the food supply chain, including manufacturing, processing, and retail. Notably, her previous role as head of agriculture at Morrisons equipped her with valuable insights into the dynamics of agriculture and food production.

In addition to her retail background, Throup has more than a decade of experience in the veterinary sector. Her career also includes significant contributions to non-executive and advisory positions. Furthermore, she held a role at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), where she contributed to the development of the Trade and Agriculture Commission.

Commitment and Vision

Upon her appointment, Throup expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “It is an honour and a privilege to have the opportunity to lead the NFU and take this great organisation forward with energy, commitment and a clear vision for its future.”

She emphasized her strong ties to agriculture, noting, “With our family farming back home in Yorkshire, my roots have always been in agriculture. I know how important this period of change is for the sector.” Additionally, Throup highlighted her belief in the power of unity, a principle that lies at the heart of the NFU. She is excited to engage with members to enact meaningful change in the farming landscape across England and Wales.

Welcoming Sophie Throup

NFU President Tom Bradshaw warmly welcomed Throup to the organization, stating, “I’d like to welcome Sophie to the NFU, and we are delighted with her appointment at this pivotal time for the farming industry.” Bradshaw acknowledged Throup’s wealth of experience in the commercial and animal health sectors, coupled with her evident passion for farming and food production. He looks forward to collaborating with her to foster a vibrant NFU that generates opportunities for its members.

In his remarks, Bradshaw also took a moment to thank Terry Jones for his dedicated leadership during his ten years at the NFU, particularly during challenging times for the sector.

Passion for Sustainable Farming

Sophie Throup hails from a mixed farm that produces milk, arable crops, and free-range eggs. The NFU regards her as a passionate advocate for farming. Notably, in recent years, Throup has played a pivotal role in establishing the School of Sustainable Food and Farming at Harper Adams University. This initiative, developed in partnership with Morrisons, the NFU, and McDonald’s, aims to shape research, training, and innovative support to bolster sustainable farming practices.

Looking Ahead

Throup will officially assume her responsibilities as the Director General of the NFU on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. As she steps into this crucial role, many will be eager to see how her vision and leadership will influence the future of agriculture in the UK.
